Well folks, grab your coffee because it's another week of news in the wild world of gaming and tech, and this time, it's got a distinctly somber tone. Kurt and I are back to unpack some significant shake-ups at both Meta and Ubisoft, plus a little something to lighten the mood – some can't-miss deals from the Steam Detective Fest. Let's dive in, shall we?
Ubisoft Bloodbath! Meta VR Studios CLOSED?! Tech I...
First up, the metaverse. Or should I say, the *Meta-mess*? Meta, it seems, is hitting the reset button (again) on its VR ambitions, announcing the closure of three VR studios. Now, I'm not going to pretend I’m shocked. The metaverse has felt more like a very expensive experiment than the future of social interaction for a while now. Laying off people is never a good thing and always has ripple effects, so let's hope that these workers can land on their feet quickly.
What exactly does this mean? Well, those studios were working on some intriguing projects, though details were always a little…vague. Now those projects are shelved, the developers are out of a job, and Meta’s already shaky reputation in the gaming space takes another hit. It begs the question: is VR even sustainable in its current form? Or is this just a temporary setback before the next big leap in the technology? Only time will tell, but for now, it's a definite downer for VR enthusiasts and developers alike. I can imagine the long meetings that led to that decision. A lot of money being passed around to cover costs and PR.
Moving on to Ubisoft, the news isn't much brighter. Massive Entertainment, the studio behind *The Division* and the upcoming *Star Wars Outlaws*, is reportedly undergoing layoffs. This is particularly concerning given how close *Star Wars Outlaws* is to release. You never want to hear about layoffs at a studio just before they ship a major title; it usually indicates deeper underlying issues. Hopefully, this doesn't impact the quality of the game too much, because, let's be honest, we're all eager to see what Massive does with the Star Wars universe. We also send well wishes to all the employees affected by this.
It's always tough to see these industry giants struggling, especially when real people's livelihoods are at stake. Economic pressures are impacting the whole market, so it makes sense, but it's still tough on both sides.
Alright, enough doom and gloom! Let's switch gears and talk about something a little more uplifting. The Steam Detective Fest sale is currently underway, and there are some seriously good deals to be had. If you're a fan of mystery, intrigue, and solving puzzles, now's the time to stock up. I think I'm going to grab a couple of them myself while the sales are still going on.
That's all for this week's rundown. Make sure to follow the links to our Spotify and RSS feed for more in-depth discussion. Stay safe, game responsibly, and remember to support the developers who make the games we love (when they're *not* laying people off, of course!). Until next time!
