BMW's SHOCK Future: 4 Series to Abandon Current Platform?!
Automotive 17 January 2026

Well, folks, put those rumors to rest! It looks like the BMW 4 Series is here to stay, and not just as some afterthought. Despite whispers that the stylish coupé might be on its way out, BMW has officially confirmed a new generation is in the works, built on the exciting "Neue Klasse" platform. That's right, the 4 Series – the sportier, design-focused sibling to the 3 Series – isn't going anywhere.

BMW's SHOCK Future: 4 Series to Abandon Current Pl...

This is particularly good news for those of us who appreciate a good M car. Initial murmurs suggested a purely electric M4, which, while intriguing, left some purists feeling a little cold. Now, it seems the evolving market has given BMW pause, hinting at a potentially more... *traditional* future for the performance variant. Exciting stuff!

The 4 Series, remember, emerged as its own distinct model back in 2013, spinning off from the 3 Series lineage. It's been a consistently successful move for BMW, and the current second generation (introduced in 2020, and also the basis for the electric i4) proves that the market still craves a sleek, two-door alternative. But with the 3 Series gearing up for its electric "Neue Klasse" transformation, the future of the combustion-engine coupé hung in the balance.

Thankfully, Joachim Post, BMW's Board Member for Development, has stepped in to clear things up. In a statement to *Autocar*, Post confirmed that the Neue Klasse family *will* include a stylish 4 Series derivative. "The 4 Series is an important car for us," he said. "It's sportier, and BMW is a sporty brand with a strong heritage on the performance side. It will continue to play an important role in the future." A sigh of relief, I think, is in order.

While we haven't seen any prototypes yet, the move makes perfect sense. Look at the competition! Audi has essentially retired the A5 Coupé (rebranding the A4 as the A5), and Mercedes has merged their C and E-Class Coupés into the CLE. BMW is smartly positioning itself to capitalize on that gap in the market. Coupés and convertibles might not move the same volume as sedans, but BMW clearly sees them as economically viable.

"It's cheaper than developing a completely new car," Post explained, highlighting the smart synergies within the BMW lineup. "Whenever we develop a 3 Series or X3, we also consider the 4 Series or X4 to leverage synergies." This also subtly confirms the future of those SUV-coupés we've all come to… well, some of us have come to love. Expect a new X4 soon, likely with an iX4 variant based on the new iX3, and a similar refresh for the larger X6. "These are cars that can be produced with relatively little additional effort [...] and offer an additional option for customers who prefer sportier designs," Post added. Makes sense to me.

The move to the Neue Klasse architecture also opens up a world of possibilities for powertrains. Expect a new generation i4 (essentially a technologically related sibling to the upcoming i3), but also don't discount highly efficient internal combustion engines under the hood. And while details are scarce, rumors suggest the electric version could even boast 108…
