Palma de Mallorca – In a heartwarming turn of events, the Palma Local Police have a new, pint-sized recruit. Panxo, a four-year-old pony rescued by the Son Reus Municipal Animal Protection Centre (CSMPA), is joining the ranks of the Mounted Police Section. It’s a feel-good story that highlights the city's commitment to animal welfare and community engagement.
Palma Police Get Tiny Partner! Rescued Pony Joins ...
Panxo's journey to the police force wasn't exactly conventional. Weeks ago, the little guy was found wandering around, clearly distressed and disoriented. The CSMPA stepped in, providing veterinary care and a safe haven. Sadly, he wasn't microchipped, so finding his owner proved impossible. Their loss is the Palma Police's gain, it seems!
Now, fully recovered and assessed as having a wonderfully friendly temperament, Panxo will be settling into his new home at the Mounted Police headquarters in Bellver Forest. Forget chasing down criminals, though. Panxo's primary duty will be a bit more... wholesome. The plan is to use him for educational activities, teaching children and teenagers about animal care and respect for the law. He'll also be trotting out (pun intended!) at parades and official city events.
This isn't the Mounted Police's only recent equine acquisition. Last year, they welcomed Máximus, a stunning four-year-old purebred Mallorcan horse. He's currently undergoing training and will eventually be deployed on patrol duties and ceremonial occasions. Máximus is stepping into some big shoes, replacing Buscall, a beloved member of the unit who served for 19 years before passing away last December at the respectable age of 21. I remember seeing Buscall at a parade a few years back - a magnificent animal.
Mounted police units are a tradition in many Spanish cities. Think Madrid, Barcelona, Seville - they're a familiar sight. They're incredibly useful for crowd control at large events, patrolling tourist hotspots, and simply providing a visible police presence that's also surprisingly approachable. A horse can go where a car can't, and they certainly have a commanding presence.
It's worth noting the investment these units make in their horses' well-being. They undergo rigorous training to ensure they're comfortable and confident in public spaces. It’s not just about law enforcement; it’s also about building bridges with the community, especially the younger generation. Panxo's role in this, as a gentle and engaging pony, will be invaluable. It's great to see the Palma Police embracing this approach.
