Nostalgia can be a powerful thing, especially when it comes to video games. We often remember titles through the rose-tinted glasses of childhood, overlooking flaws that become glaringly obvious with age. But what happens when you revisit a game you swore was amazing, only to find…well, we'll see. Game Informer's Charles Harte is putting that to the test with "Sonic and the Black Knight," a game he genuinely believed was a masterpiece back when he was nine.
Sonic's Dark Secret REVEALED! Knight's Shocking Tw...
For the uninitiated, "Sonic and the Black Knight," released back in 2009 for the Nintendo Wii, is... well, it's certainly a Sonic game. But it's also a medieval Arthurian legend, starring the blue blur wielding a talking sword named Caliburn. Yes, you read that right. This was the second, and final, installment of the "Sonic Storybook Series," following "Sonic and the Secret Rings." The premise? Sonic gets yanked into the world of King Arthur and has to, you guessed it, save the kingdom. It's... ambitious, to say the least.
Now, before you get too excited (or groan audibly), it's important to remember that "Sonic and the Black Knight" wasn't exactly a critical darling upon release. In fact, it was generally panned. Game Informer themselves gave it a rather lukewarm 5/10 in issue 193. Ouch. So, the question is, does Charles' youthful enthusiasm hold any water almost two decades later? Or will the cold, harsh light of adult criticism expose the game's flaws?
That's what Game Informer is setting out to discover in their "Super Replay" series. Charles Harte, along with Marcus Stewart, are dusting off their Wii remotes and diving headfirst into the world of Camelot…or at least, Sonic's version of it. They're live-streaming their playthroughs every Friday at 12 pm PT/3 pm ET on Twitch and YouTube. You can also catch up on past episodes if you've missed them, including "Sonic And The Black Knight - Part 1."
I have to admit, I'm intrigued. "Sonic and the Black Knight" always seemed like such a bizarre concept, even for a franchise that's never been afraid to take risks. Whether it's a hidden gem or a complete train wreck, watching Charles and Marcus relive this game through the lens of both childhood wonder and adult scrutiny promises to be entertaining. Who knows, maybe there's something to appreciate here after all. Or maybe Charles' childhood memories are about to be shattered. Either way, it's going to be a fun ride. Check it out!
