Rings of Power Star Attacked! Hero On & Off Screen?!

Rings of Power Star Attacked! Hero On & Off Screen?!

Peter Mullan, the seasoned actor you might recognize from "The Rings of Power" (he plays King Durin III, if you’re keeping score), found himself in a real-life drama last year that's far removed from the fantasy realms of Middle-earth. It turns out he was attacked in Glasgow after stepping in to help a woman he saw being assaulted. Honestly, the guy's a legend, both on and off screen.

Rings of Power Star Attacked! Hero On & Off Screen...

The details, which emerged from a court case that concluded today, are pretty grim. Dylan Bennet has been sentenced to 18 months behind bars for the assault, which targeted both Mullan and the woman he was trying to protect. The BBC's reporting from Glasgow Sheriff Court painted a picture of Bennet behaving aggressively outside the O2 Academy in September. Apparently, Mullan saw the woman in distress and, without hesitation, intervened.

And that's when things escalated. Bennet, according to the reports, headbutted Mullan, causing a head wound. Adding to the violence, he allegedly brandished a glass bottle at both Mullan and the woman. It’s the kind of scenario that makes your blood boil. You hear about these things happening, but it’s different when it's someone you actually know, even if only through their work.

Bennet's lawyer tried to paint a picture of a man overwhelmed by alcohol and drugs that night, expressing his client's "deep regret" for his actions. While everyone deserves a fair defense, it doesn't excuse the behavior. You can't just go around attacking people, especially not when they're trying to do the right thing. I’ve seen enough of this kind of behaviour to know it’s often a pattern.

Mullan, for his part, seems to be taking it in stride, at least publicly. This isn't the first time he's shown his mettle. Remember his outspoken comments at Series Mania 2024? He didn't mince words when calling Kevin Spacey an "a**hole" and even took a swipe at certain "Lord of the Rings" fans. The man’s got opinions, that's for sure, and he’s not afraid to voice them. Beyond "Rings of Power," he's racked up an impressive resume, including roles in "I Swear" and "Top of the Lake," the latter earning him an Emmy nomination. He's a serious actor with a serious commitment to his craft.

Ultimately, the sentencing of Dylan Bennet sends a clear message: violence, especially against those trying to help, won't be tolerated. And Peter Mullan, despite being the victim of a senseless attack, reinforces the idea that sometimes, the heroes we see on screen can also be heroes in real life. Here's hoping for a swift recovery for Mullan, and perhaps a little less violence in the world in general.
