The School bell has finally rung, marking the end of the first semester for millions of students across the country! Around 18 million primary and secondary school students are officially on their mid-year break, having received their report cards and eagerly anticipating some well-deserved rest and relaxation. Classes for the 2025-2026 academic year kicked off back on September 8th, 2025, and it feels like just yesterday!

The Ministry of National Education (MEB) has released the official calendar, confirming that the holiday period, starting today with the traditional report card distribution ceremonies, runs until Friday, January 30th, 2026. That gives students a solid fifteen days to recharge their batteries before diving back into their studies. Mark your calendars, everyone: the second semester commences on Monday, February 2nd, 2026. Prepare for the rush back to School!

But there’s a twist this year, especially for our youngest learners. The MEB, in a move aligned with their "Türkiye Yüzyılı Maarif Model" (Turkey Century Education Model), has introduced "development reports" for first and second-grade students. Say goodbye (at least temporarily) to traditional letter grades for these youngsters. Instead, these reports focus on monitoring the development of social and emotional learning skills, something I personally think is a fantastic idea. It’s about nurturing well-rounded individuals, not just grade-grubbing machines.

This shift in assessment philosophy acknowledges that education isn't solely about memorizing facts and figures. It's about cultivating empathy, communication, and critical thinking – skills that are increasingly vital in today’s rapidly changing world. I remember when I was in first grade; all I cared about was getting that gold star! This new system seems much more holistic and considers the child's overall growth, which is a significant improvement, in my view. Imagine the pressure taken off those tiny shoulders!
