Well folks, it looks like the writing is on the wall for Amazon's once-promising MMO, "New World." The tech giant has officially announced that the game will be sunsetting on January 31, 2027. That’s a little over a year from now. Amazon, you might recall, poured serious resources into this project, aiming to carve out a piece of the lucrative MMO pie. It launched with a lot of hype, a beautiful world, and a somewhat clunky combat system that some people loved, and others…well, not so much.
New World DOOMED?! Rust Dev's SHOCK Offer to Save ...
The announcement comes with the rather blunt news that "New World" has already been removed from sale. So, if you were thinking of jumping in, unfortunately, you've missed the boat. Existing players, however, can continue to hack and slash their way through Aeternum until the very last day. Amazon is even extending the current Nighthaven season, allowing players to fully experience the final chapter (or at least, the final *official* chapter) of the game.
Amazon released a statement, dripping with bittersweet sentiment: "It has been our pleasure to work on New World: Aeternum and evolve this unforgettable adventure with you all," they said. "We look forward to one more year together, and giving this fantastic adventure a sendoff worthy of a legendary hero. From the bottom of all our hearts, thank you for sharing this world with us.” A nice, polite goodbye, but it’s hard not to see the pragmatism beneath the words.
Now, this isn't exactly a surprise. Rumors of the game's impending doom have been swirling for months, especially since Amazon announced plans to transition "New World" into maintenance mode back in October. This coincided with a massive round of layoffs, impacting a staggering 14,000 positions. At the time, they said the game would stay online through 2026, so this new date suggests maybe things aren't going quite as smoothly as they hoped. It makes you wonder what internal metrics they were tracking that ultimately led to this decision.
Interestingly, there’s been some… chatter… in the game development community about the situation. Garry Newman, the creator of the wildly successful survival game "Rust," jokingly (or maybe not so jokingly?) offered to buy "New World" from Amazon. He posted on X (formerly Twitter), inquiring how much it would cost. It's unlikely Amazon would actually sell it, but it underscores the potential some still see in the game, even in its current state. It's a shame to see a world with such potential go dark, but in the cutthroat world of MMOs, sometimes even the biggest companies can't make it work.
