Animal Crossing Update SAVES Game?! Switch 2 Shocks Fans!
Gaming News 16 January 2026

Okay, let's be honest. I was *really* looking forward to using the megaphone in Animal Crossing: New Horizons' supposed "Switch 2 Edition" to heckle poor Chops from one end of Honaloha to the other. The idea of shouting ridiculous demands at him, only to see his bewildered expression… pure gold, right? Sadly, the reality is far less entertaining. The voice recognition is so spotty – I swear, it's more likely to attract the attention of a butterfly than the intended villager – that a full-blown island rebellion feels imminent. The megaphone's already gathering dust in my storage, and I'm not convinced there's enough else here to justify the upgrade price, even at a measly £4.19.

Animal Crossing Update SAVES Game?! Switch 2 Shock...

As many of you have probably heard, New Horizons has been given a bit of an unexpected revival this week. After what most of us assumed was the final curtain call with the 2.0 update back in 2021, Nintendo dropped a surprise announcement late last year. This refresh comes in two flavors: a free content patch for everyone, and a paid upgrade aimed at leveraging some assumed Switch 2 features. Interesting.

For that £4.19, you get the infamous (and largely useless) megaphone, mouse support (which, admittedly, is kind of nice), an increase in multiplayer capacity to 12 players, built-in GameChat for voice and video, and a resolution bump – but sadly, no improvement to the framerate. If you happen to have a dozen Animal Crossing-playing friends with remarkably pleasant demeanors who somehow haven't discovered party chat on their phones, then *maybe* the paid upgrade is worth considering. However, for the majority of players, the free patch is where the real appeal lies.

So, how am I finding it all? The headline addition is a brand-new hotel on my island. Now, I'm not an engineer or anything, but I remain slightly skeptical that an eight-bedroom resort, complete with a reception area and souvenir shop, can be built on a small wooden pier without, you know, immediately collapsing into the sea. But hey, I'm willing to suspend my disbelief for the sake of a good time! As the flagship feature in this 3.0 update, it's… perfectly adequate.

If you already invested in the Happy Home Paradise expansion from 2021, then much of this will feel pretty familiar. Each day, a few new rooms become available, prompting you to unleash your inner interior designer and decorate them with furniture and decor to fit a specific theme. Once you're done, you get rewarded with hotel currency, which you can then spend on souvenirs (the fact that Tom Nook is essentially paying employees with money they can only spend at their workplace is, of course, perfectly in line with his brand of dystopian capitalism). Eventually, a couple of off-island animal tourists will briefly grace your island with their presence. Oh, and you can dictate their outfits during their stay, ensuring everyone can spot them as total outsiders from a mile away. And… that's pretty much it.

Honestly, by all accounts, I probably shouldn't be enjoying this as much as I am, considering I've done basically the same thing countless times in Happy Home Paradise. But, I am. Turns out, I'm still easily lulled into a state of serene tranquility whenever I'm tasked with perfectly matching wallpaper to a couple of chairs. And hey, it's all presented with that typically lovable Animal Crossing charm that's hard to resist. Maybe that's enough.
