The consensus? A significant portion of Americans believe the shooting was unjustified and that ICE’s actions are making our cities less safe, according to recent surveys.

Over 90% of Democrats felt the shooting was unjustified, as did around 60% of independents. Meanwhile, over three-quarters of Republicans thought the ICE agent was in the right. But it doesn't stop there. A CNN poll dug deeper into perceptions of ICE and its impact. Over half – 51% – believe ICE enforcement actions are actually making cities *less* safe, compared to just 31% who believe they're enhancing safety. Again, we see that partisan split: a whopping 82% of Democrats think ICE is detrimental to city safety, while 67% of Republicans think it's improving things. It's hard to find common ground when views are this diametrically opposed. I find it fascinating and a little disheartening to see these numbers.

And perhaps most troubling of all, the CNN poll revealed a deep-seated lack of trust in the federal government's ability to conduct a fair and thorough investigation into the Minneapolis shooting. A staggering 62% expressed little to no trust, with nearly half saying they had *no* trust at all. Only a tiny 17% expressed a "great deal" of trust. That’s a damning indictment of public confidence in our institutions, wouldn’t you say?

The polls also touched on broader approval ratings for those in charge. While President Trump’s handling of immigration and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s performance receive disapproval from a majority of Americans, the numbers vary between the Quinnipiac and CNN polls, suggesting some shifts in public perception. One thing's clear, though: this is a highly sensitive and politically charged issue, and these polls reflect the depth of the divisions within our society.
