Princess Dazzles in Red! What Royal Statement Is She Making?

Princess Catherine brought a vibrant splash of color to a gray Windsor day, donning a stunning red Alexander McQueen trouser suit for a reception honoring England’s victorious Women’s Rugby team, the Red Roses. The event at Windsor Castle celebrated the team’s incredible World Cup win last September, and the Princess, in her role as patron of the Rugby Football Union, was clearly delighted to share in their continued success.

I remember watching the highlights of that World Cup – what a performance! It was brilliant to see the Princess so engaged with the team's achievement. She was even present at their victory over Australia in Brighton earlier in September, so this wasn’t just a formal obligation, she seems genuinely invested. John Mitchell, the team's coach, was right in the thick of the festivities, and you could feel the celebratory atmosphere even through the photos.

One of the more charming anecdotes to emerge was shared by Ellie Kildunne, a BBC Sports Personality of the Year nominee. According to reports, the Princess gamely embraced the team's "cowboy" dance, even sporting a cowboy hat. "She was a good sport and put the hat on, she did a bit of a cowboy dance, and it was a really special moment," Kildunne said. Apparently, the hat even featured a rhinestone tiara – the Princess really knows how to accessorize! Kildunne, known for inking teammates (and even Coach Mitchell!), jokingly threatened to give the Princess a cowboy-themed tattoo. Now that would be a story!

The gray and rainy weather in Windsor couldn't dampen the spirits of the players and staff arriving for the reception. While a planned tour of Windsor Castle was unfortunately canceled due to a coach breakdown (always a risk with older vehicles, I suppose), Ellie Kildunne and Emily Scarratt were pictured arriving with smiles on their faces, ready to celebrate. The Band of the Irish Guards provided a fittingly rousing welcome for everyone.

Further details revealed the Princess’s genuine interest in the team’s well-being and celebrations. She reportedly inquired about their festivities the previous night, asking, "Was everyone there last night? Any sore heads this morning?" eliciting laughter from the group. She also emphasized the team's inspirational impact on the next generation, stating, "You’ve really inspired all the new generation [that] perhaps might not even have thought rugby was for them."

It seems the Princess is also fostering a love of rugby within her own family. She shared that Prince George, 12, and Prince Louis, 7, both play rugby at school, while Princess Charlotte, 10, gets involved during family games at home. Talking about young children playing sports together regardless of gender, she made a point about not "pigeonhol[ing] boys and girls in particular sports too early." She even joked about how she avoids being tackled by George during their home games, highlighting the increasing physical strength of her growing children. Before departing, the Princess posed for a large group photo with the players, a fitting end to a day celebrating teamwork, dedication, and the joy of sport.
