Another one bites the dust, folks. The US Southern Command just announced the seizure of yet another foreign-flagged oil tanker, this time in the Caribbean. They're calling it the Veronica, and according to officials, it's linked to Venezuela and operating against established US sanctions in the region. Seems like things are really heating up down south.
Oil Tanker Seized! US Action Sparks Global Shockwa...
This all comes as President Trump seems to be tightening the screws on Venezuela's oil exports, especially after that wild incident in January where Maduro was apparently "abducted." Hard to believe that all went down, but here we are. The US military and Coast Guard haven't been shy, apparently seizing five vessels in international waters just in recent weeks. It’s a pretty aggressive stance, wouldn't you say?
Of course, not everyone's happy about it. Moscow, for instance, is throwing shade at the US for seizing the Russian-flagged Marinera, calling it a straight-up violation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. International waters are supposed to be just that, international. Things get a bit tricky when sanctions and political agendas enter the picture.
According to Southern Command's X post (formerly Twitter, naturally), the Veronica, which marine records suggest flies under a Guyanese flag, was boarded in a dramatic "pre-dawn action." Cue the grainy black and white aerial footage, you know the drill, showing troops rappelling onto the deck. The command claims the vessel was defying Trump's "quarantine" of sanctioned vessels in the Caribbean. Talk about a loaded statement. The 815-foot Veronica was last spotted off the Venezuelan coast about 12 days prior to the seizure, according to ship tracking data.
"The Department of War is unwavering in its mission to crush illicit activity in the Western Hemisphere," Southern Command declared. Seriously, "crush"? That's some pretty strong language. They're calling this whole operation "Southern Spear." Sounds like something out of a Tom Clancy novel, honestly. And, according to Reuters, the Justice Department is gearing up to seize dozens more tankers suspected of sanction evasion.
It's clear that the US wants a tight grip on Venezuelan crude shipments. Trump even said Washington would "run" Venezuela during a transitional period and needs "total access" to their oil. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright went even further, stating that Washington intends to control Venezuela’s oil sales "indefinitely." That's not exactly subtle, is it?
The international community is definitely taking notice. Russia has condemned the capture of Maduro and reaffirmed its solidarity with Venezuela, calling the whole situation a "flagrant violation" of international law and "blatant neo-colonial threats." They're demanding Maduro's immediate release. It's a messy situation with no easy answers, and it looks like the tension is only going to keep escalating. Buckle up, folks.
