Warhammer 40K fans, brace yourselves. It looks like King Art Games is pulling out all the stops to make *Dawn of War 4* the goriest, most brutal RTS in the series yet. And honestly, that's saying something, considering the franchise’s legacy of over-the-top violence.
Warhammer 40K: Brutal Dawn of War 4 Animations Rev...
IGN recently spoke with Thomas Derksen, the animation director on *Dawn of War 4*, and the conversation was all about bringing the grimdark universe to life with even more horrifying detail. Derksen himself seems to have a real appreciation for the series' signature style. "I remember seeing the dreadnought grabbing an ork and crushing him in his hand," he recalled, painting a vivid picture. "It was spectacular to see all of this, the stuff that you only ever imagined in your head, really play out in real time during a game in a spectacular way. This was just awesome." I mean, who *doesn't* love a good Ork-crushing, right?
The key to achieving this new level of brutality lies in procedurally generated animations. Forget canned kill sequences. *Dawn of War 4* will dynamically create animations based on the relative size, weight, and strength of the combatants. Imagine a hulking Dreadnought engaging a puny Gretchin – the animation will reflect that power imbalance in a way we haven't seen before. It's not just about fatalities either. Every swing, every parry, every desperate struggle will be rendered with this new system. This should lead to incredibly dynamic looking battles, with a real sense of weight and impact.
Derksen explained that they're using a system of "power levels" to differentiate how units interact. A Gretchin, for instance, won't stand a chance against a Dreadnought in the same way another Dreadnought would. Makes sense, right? But it's the level of detail they're going for that's really exciting. Different units will have their own unique ranges of actions available to them based on their power level, creating a tangible hierarchy on the battlefield.
And speaking of titans, get this: Lion El'Jonson, a Primarch of the Dark Angels, is making his *Dawn of War* debut. As a long-time fan of the lore, I can tell you this is a *big* deal. They're treating his animation with the utmost respect, which hopefully means we'll get a truly legendary performance from him in the campaign. He's a character steeped in history and power, and it's going to be amazing to see him unleashed on the battlefield.
One challenge with having larger battles, according to Derksen, is maintaining readability. To combat this, the animations have been designed to be more visually distinct, even from a zoomed-out perspective. They've added more movement to the combat, with units dragging each other and grappling on the ground, making it easier to understand what's happening at a glance. This is a smart move – nobody wants to squint and struggle to decipher the chaos.
And let's not forget about the Orks. Apparently, even their base-building animations are getting a dose of faction-specific personality. Knowing the Orks, I'm expecting a delightfully ramshackle and chaotic construction process. *Dawn of War 4* sounds like it's shaping up to be a true love letter to the Warhammer 40K universe, and I, for one, am eagerly awaiting its release.
