Trump's Insurrection Act Threat! Walz Accused of "Terrorism?!"
Current Affairs 15 January 2026

Tensions are boiling over in Minnesota, folks. President Trump is now threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act as clashes escalate following yet another ICE shooting. For those unfamiliar, the 1807 law essentially allows the President to deploy the military on U.S. soil, a move that hasn't been seen in decades. Honestly, just the *threat* of using it is pretty shocking.

Trump's Insurrection Act Threat! Walz Accused of "...

Trump's social media post was, shall we say, direct. "If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don't obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the Insurrection Act, which many Presidents have done before me, and quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great State," he wrote. It's hard to miss the combative tone.

Adding fuel to the fire, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche went even further, accusing Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey – both Democrats – of basically enabling "terrorism."

"Minnesota insurrection is a direct result of a FAILED governor and a TERRIBLE mayor encouraging violence against law enforcement. It's disgusting," Blanche posted on X. "Walz and Frey -- I'm focused on stopping YOU from your terrorism by whatever means necessary. This is not a threat. It's a promise." It's pretty rare to see a Deputy Attorney General speak so bluntly. ABC News has reached out to both Walz and Frey for comment, but so far, no response.

This all comes after Walz himself issued a scathing rebuke of the federal government's presence in the state. This followed a federal officer shooting someone who allegedly fled a traffic stop and then, with two others, attacked the officer. Just a week prior, Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother, was fatally shot by an ICE agent, sparking outrage. DHS claims she tried to run over officers, a claim local officials are disputing. The narrative is really splitting along party lines here.

"It’s a campaign of organized brutality against the people of Minnesota by our own federal government," Walz said in a Wednesday address, urging residents to "protest loudly, urgently, but also peacefully." Frey, known for previously telling ICE to "get the f--- out" of Minneapolis, echoed these sentiments, stating, "the situation we are seeing in our city is not sustainable."

We've seen this playbook before. Trump threatened the Insurrection Act last summer during protests in Los Angeles related to immigration crackdowns. The Insurrection Act, interestingly, has been used around 30 times throughout history, including by Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy during the desegregation of schools. It's a drastic measure, and its potential use here speaks volumes about the current state of division in the country. It states that "Whenever there is an insurrection in any State against its government, the President may…call into Federal service such of the militia of the other States…and use such of the armed forces…as he considers necessary to enforce those laws..." The situation bears watching closely.
