Ram Rampage Charges into Europe: A Compact Pickup Poised to Fill a Niche

Ram is betting big on European drivers with the introduction of the Rampage, a "premium compact lifestyle pickup" designed to bridge the gap between compact crossovers and traditional mid-size trucks. While not entirely new, having debuted in Brazil a few years ago, the Rampage's European launch marks a significant expansion for the Stellantis brand.

The Rampage, built in Brazil, is noticeably smaller than its American counterpart, the Ram 1500. Measuring just over five meters long, it promises to be more manageable on Europe's narrower roads and tighter parking spaces. Available in two distinct trims, the off-road-focused Rebel and the performance-oriented R/T, the Rampage offers a blend of practicality and style.

The Rebel trim boasts all-terrain tires

The Rebel trim boasts all-terrain tires and a rugged aesthetic, while the R/T features a sportier suspension, larger wheels, and a slightly lower ride height. Both versions prioritize functionality, offering a generous 980 liters of bed space. The diesel-powered Rebel stands out with its impressive payload capacity of over a ton.

Under the hood, European buyers have a choice between two distinct engine options. The Rebel is powered by a 2.2-liter MultiJet diesel engine producing 200 horsepower, while the R/T packs a punch with a 272 horsepower powerplant related to the Hurricane family. Performance figures reflect this difference, with the R/T boasting a quicker 0-100 km/h sprint time of 6.9 seconds compared to the diesel's 9.9 seconds.

Beyond performance, the Rampage is equipped with a range of modern features, including disc brakes, independent suspension, hill start assist, and hill descent control. Advanced driver-assistance systems like Highway Assist and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go are also available. Inside, the cabin features a 12.3-inch infotainment system, a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and an optional Harman Kardon sound system.

The Rampage's European debut coincides with the launch of the new Toyota Hilux, but Ram is keen to emphasize that the two vehicles cater to different markets. While the Hilux remains a traditional mid-size pickup aimed at competitors like the Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok, the Rampage seeks to carve out its own niche as a more compact and lifestyle-oriented alternative. It remains to be seen if European consumers will embrace this new category, but Ram is confident that the Rampage offers a unique blend of practicality, performance, and style that will resonate with a new generation of pickup truck buyers.
