Animal Crossing Update SHOCK! Free Version Released EARLY?! You Won't Believe It!

Well, that was unexpected! It seems like Nintendo decided to give us a little early Christmas… in January! The free 3.0 update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons just dropped on the Switch, a little ahead of schedule. I know, I know, we were all expecting to wait until the witching hour of 1 a.m. GMT on January 15th, but surprise! It's here, it's live, and the villagers are probably already gossiping about it.

My colleagues over at Eurogamer have already confirmed it’s downloadable, and I can only imagine the frantic scramble to boot up those Switches and see what’s new. I haven't had a chance to dive in myself just yet – deadlines, you know how it is – but I'm already itching to get back to my island and see what fresh chaos awaits.

From what I’ve gathered so far, the big kahuna in this update is the new Resort Hotel. Apparently, Kapp'n’s family is running the show down on the pier. I always liked Kapp'n; he had a certain… charm. Hopefully his family inherited some of that sea shanty spirit. It'll be interesting to see what kind of shenanigans (hopefully the good kind!) await us at this new island getaway.

And hold on to your hats, because Resetti is back! Remember Resetti? The mole who loved to yell at you for not saving your game? Well, he’s mellowed out a bit, it seems. Now he's offering a "Reset Service" – essentially a quick and easy way to restart your game. I'm honestly a little relieved; I think we all had a collective heart attack every time he popped out of the ground back in the day.

Now, a word of caution for those of you super eager beavers. While the free update is live and ready to download, the paid "Switch 2" upgrade (because, you know, calling it a simple DLC is just too straightforward) is still slated for its original release date: January 15th. So, you'll have to be patient a little longer for that one.
