CAIRO – Talk of a new governing body for Gaza is swirling again, this time with Hamas officials confirming Wednesday that discussions have begun with Egyptian mediators right here in Cairo. The subject? The formation of a "technocratic committee" to govern the war-torn region. This is a key part of the US-brokered truce plan initially championed by none other than Donald Trump last year.
Gaza on the Brink?! Hamas & Egypt's Secret Meeting...
Remember Trump's ambitious 20-point program floated back in October? It envisioned Gaza being administered by this transitional Palestinian committee, all while being overseen by a "Board of Peace," with, you guessed it, Trump himself at the helm. It was a bold plan, to say the least, and while Trump's no longer in office, the core ideas seem to be lingering.
According to a senior Hamas official, who spoke on condition of anonymity (these guys are always tight-lipped, aren't they?), the meeting's aim is to hammer out the operational details of this committee. This includes not just *who* will be on it, but also *how* it will function. Separately, the Hamas delegation is also slated to sit down with other Palestinian factions who've also arrived in the Egyptian capital. It's a crowded room, to be sure, and you can only imagine the dynamics at play.
The agenda is packed: "These discussions will cover political, national and field developments, the ceasefire agreement in light of alleged Israeli violations, and the technocratic committee, including the names of its members and its prospective chair," the official explained. In other words, everything's on the table, from the fragile ceasefire to the nitty-gritty of who gets to run Gaza.
Hamas, for its part, is trying to downplay its direct involvement. They’ve consistently said they don’t want a governing role in Gaza, positioning themselves more as monitors to ensure stability and help with reconstruction. It's a clever narrative, if you ask me, allowing them to exert influence without taking direct responsibility.
But it's not just about governance. These talks are also tackling the immediate crises: the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the reopening of the Rafah crossing (a crucial lifeline), and getting aid flowing from Egypt into Gaza. They're also prepping for the next phase of the ceasefire, whatever that might entail.
Here’s the really interesting part: Egypt is also trying to broker a meeting between Hamas and Fatah, the rival Palestinian faction led by Mahmoud Abbas. Getting these two to agree on the committee's composition is crucial, apparently. Once they do, Abbas is expected to issue a presidential decree formally establishing the body. Word on the street is that Ali Shaath, a former deputy minister, and Majed Abu Ramadan, the current health minister, are being floated as potential leaders. It’s all still very fluid, though.
The real kicker? Gaining unified backing for this committee is critical. And while the names are being discussed, the future of Trump’s "Board of Peace," especially who will lead it "on the ground," remains largely undefined.
