Snow Day Chaos! Is Your School on the List?!
Education 13 January 2026

Mother Nature has decided to remind us who's boss, folks, and in several parts of Turkey, that means School's out! Following a string of weather warnings that had meteorologists practically shouting from the rooftops, heavy snowfall and icy conditions have forced authorities to temporarily close schools in multiple provinces. This isn't just a dusting; we're talking about conditions that make even a short walk to the bus stop a treacherous undertaking.

Snow Day Chaos! Is Your School on the List?!

Tunceli is one of the first to pull the trigger, announcing a one-day suspension of all educational activities. The Governor's Office released a statement emphasizing the need to prioritize safety amidst the hazardous weather. "On Wednesday, January 14th, all formal and non-formal education institutions, excluding the university, throughout our province will suspend education for one day," the statement read. That's a smart move. Nobody wants to risk kids slipping and sliding their way to School, or worse.

But it doesn't stop there. Ordu, a province known for its beautiful Black Sea coastline, is also feeling the chill. They've gone even further, shutting down all schools in 13 districts and implementing partial closures in another six. That's a significant portion of the province affected. The Ordu Governor's Office specified that Akkuş, Aybastı, Çamaş, Çaybaşı, Gölköy, Gürgentepe, İkizce, Kabadüz, Kabataş, Korgan, Kumru, Mesudiye, and Ulubey districts are all under a full shutdown. Altınordu, Fatsa, Ünye, Çatalpınar, Gülyalı, and Perşembe districts are experiencing partial closures. It's a complex situation, but the bottom line is clear: safety first.

And it's not just students being considered. In both Tunceli and Ordu, authorities have also granted administrative leave to pregnant employees, disabled personnel, those with chronic illnesses, and female employees with young children in public institutions. I think this is a thoughtful and important detail. It acknowledges that these weather conditions impact more than just schoolchildren.

Finally, Ardahan is grappling with its own set of challenges. The Governor's Office reports that snow and blizzards are severely disrupting transportation, particularly in areas where students rely on school buses or other forms of transport. "Except for Posof district, transportation-based education in the city center and other districts has been suspended today," the statement noted. This highlights a different aspect of the weather's impact – the logistical nightmare it creates for rural communities.

So, if you're in any of these areas, stay safe, stay warm, and maybe enjoy a day of sledding (safely, of course!). It's a good reminder that even with all our modern technology, we're still at the mercy of Mother Nature's whims. And sometimes, that means a snow day. We'll continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
