The grim darkness of the far future... or rather, the slightly less grim present, is the subject of many a Warhammer 40,000 fan’s thoughts these days. Specifically: where *is* that Henry Cavill-fronted cinematic universe we were promised? Games Workshop, the company behind the beloved tabletop wargame, has finally addressed the elephant in the room, well, more like the Space Marine in the sector.
Warhammer Fans Stunned! Cavill's 40K Delay, Age of...
Let’s be honest, everyone and their mother (probably a heretek, just saying) got excited when the news broke that Henry Cavill, he of Superman fame and a well-known Warhammer enthusiast, was not only going to star in but *also* executive produce a live-action Warhammer 40,000 adaptation for Amazon’s Prime Video. The potential! The possibilities! The accurately-painted miniatures we hoped would grace our screens! But… silence, mostly. So, what’s the hold-up?
Games Workshop's latest financial report, while boasting of healthy profits (enough for a new Titan or two, presumably), included a somewhat cryptic but reassuring update from CEO Kevin Rountree. He essentially stated that Amazon is driving the bus on this particular project. Which, while not a detailed roadmap, does give us some indication that the project is still very much alive. Rountree's words suggest that the pace and specifics are largely in Amazon's hands now. In short: it's coming, but when is anyone's guess.
And let's face it, adapting the Warhammer 40,000 universe isn't exactly a walk in the park. Think about it: You’re talking about millennia of galactic warfare, countless factions, and the sheer scale of the thing. We're not just talking about a few guys with swords. We're talking Space Marines battling horrors from the Warp, epic space battles spanning centuries, and planetary invasions involving billions of soldiers. All that needs to be done *right* while staying within a *realistic* budget. That's a tall order, even for Amazon.
However, it's not all waiting and worrying in the dark millenium (or 2024, as it's more commonly known). Games Workshop also confirmed that a standalone *Warhammer Age of Sigmar* animated series is in development for Prime Video. So, while we wait for the gritty, live-action 40K, at least we'll have something else to tide us over. Maybe this animated effort will show Amazon what can be done right, and will speed the development of our live-action series. One can dream, anyway!
