RAMageddon! Tech Prices Skyrocket - Is Your Gadget Doomed?!

Here's the article:

CES 2026 is in full swing, and while the shiny new gadgets are tempting, there's a palpable sense of unease hanging in the air, especially among us tech journalists. It's not the usual anxiety about product reliability or corporate overreach. This year, it's the RAM. Specifically, the sky-high price of it, and how it's threatening to make the tech landscape a whole lot more…boring.

RAMageddon! Tech Prices Skyrocket - Is Your Gadget...

Remember the excitement surrounding the surge of mini gaming PCs, handheld consoles like the Steam Deck, and the resurgence of the Steam Machine concept? The idea was simple: bring PC gaming to the masses with more affordable, accessible hardware. But that dream is running headfirst into a wall of expensive RAM. The demand for RAM has simply exploded, driven by everything from AI development to cloud computing, leaving manufacturers struggling to keep up, and prices soaring.

I caught up with a few of my colleagues – Michael Higham from IGN, David Lumb from CNET, Matthew Buzzi over at PC Mag, and Tim Werth from Mashable – and the consensus was grim. "This isn't just a minor price bump," Higham told me, "it's a fundamental shift that's going to reshape the market." Lumb added, "We're seeing manufacturers being incredibly cagey about pricing. They're showing off amazing tech, but nobody wants to commit to a number because they don't know what RAM is going to cost them next week!"

And that's the real problem. The escalating cost of RAM isn't just about higher prices for consumers; it's stifling innovation. Buzzi pointed out, "Think about it: if RAM is the most expensive component, manufacturers are going to be less likely to experiment with cutting-edge features or offer more generous memory configurations. They'll play it safe, and we'll end up with iterative updates instead of genuine breakthroughs."

Werth echoed this sentiment, observing that "the accessibility that was driving the mini-PC and handheld boom is directly undermined by this. If a handheld PC costs $800 instead of $500 because of RAM, suddenly it's not so appealing to the average gamer." He's right. We're potentially looking at a future where cutting-edge tech is increasingly out of reach, reserved for those who can afford the premium RAM prices. It's a frustrating situation, to say the least. I came to CES hoping to see the future of gaming, but instead I'm worried about how much that future is going to cost – and whether it will be worth it.
