FRANKFORT, Ky. — If Democrats want to stand a chance at snagging more governorships this midterm election, they need to ditch the lofty rhetoric and focus on the stuff that actually keeps Americans up at night: housing costs, healthcare bills, and generally making ends meet. That's the word straight from Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who's been tapped to lead the charge in boosting the party's gubernatorial prospects.
Beshear's Secret Weapon?! How He's Crushing the GO...
With a whopping 36 Gubernatorial races up for grabs this November, the pressure is on. Democrats are hoping to capitalize on some recent momentum from wins in Virginia and New Jersey and actually start flipping some statehouses. Beshear's argument? Keep it simple, keep it real, and talk about the economy.
But it's not just about dollars and cents, according to Beshear. He also believes Democrats need to be more upfront about how their personal values, including their faith, shape their policy ideas. “I believe that Americans are craving authenticity right now,” Beshear said. “They want to know you. They want to at least know what drives you. Because if they’re going to cast their vote for you, believing that you will make their life better, they want you to know that something is driving you to do that that is real and important to you." It's a fair point – voters want to connect with their leaders on a human level, not just see them as policy robots.
Beshear himself is an interesting case study. He's term-limited in Kentucky, and while he dodged questions about a 2028 presidential run, it's clear he's got ambitions. He managed to win three statewide elections in Kentucky – a state that's been trending heavily Republican – first as attorney general and then twice as governor, beating opponents who had Trump's backing. That's no small feat.
This year, Beshear plans to hit the road, campaigning for Democratic gubernatorial hopefuls in key swing states. He's predicting the party will gain ground in 2026 by hammering home those kitchen-table issues like jobs, healthcare, housing, education, and public safety. It’s a smart strategy. People are worried about their wallets, and if Democrats can credibly offer solutions, they'll be in a much stronger position.
A key part of the message is framing Democratic governors as a bulwark against policies enacted during the Trump administration that are making life harder for ordinary Americans, Beshear said. "When we elect Democratic governors, it helps the people of that state immensely," he asserted. "Democratic governors create good jobs with wages where you cannot only support your family, but you can afford to take that family vacation every once in a while. Democratic governors expand health care, they don’t contract it. And Democratic governors push back against the overreach of this Trump administration that is impacting people’s lives on a daily basis.”
In Kentucky, Beshear recently laid out his budget proposals to the Republican-controlled legislature, calling for more state investment in housing, education, and healthcare. He also urged Democratic candidates to go on the attack and challenge the GOP’s tax and spending bill, arguing that it delivered massive tax breaks while... (story cuts off mid-sentence).
