Mijas Scores Big! Is This the Future of Costa del Sol Sports?
Current Affairs 12 January 2026

Mijas is about to get a whole lot sportier. Local officials have officially greenlit plans for a massive, state-of-the-art Sports complex in the Dos Elías area. This isn't just some renovated park; we're talking about a serious investment in community well-being and athletic opportunity. For those of us who’ve been stuck with aging facilities, this news is definitely welcome.

The complex will sprawl across two adjacent municipal plots, totaling a whopping 11,300 square meters. To put that in perspective, that's almost three football fields! One plot, roughly 4,500 square meters, will house a covered pavilion, while the other, the larger of the two at nearly 7,000 square meters, is earmarked for outdoor leisure activities. Positioned right on the corner of Calle Vicente Aleixandre and Camino de Campanales, accessibility seems to be a key consideration. Smart move, Mijas council.

So, what exactly will this sports mecca include? Well, for starters, there's an Olympic-size swimming pool – fully compliant with national competition standards. That’s going to be a game-changer for local swimming clubs and potentially attract some serious competitions to the area. Add to that a seven-a-side football pitch boasting state-of-the-art artificial turf (no more muddy knees!), and two padel tennis courts. Padel's been exploding in popularity lately, so that's a savvy inclusion. I’ve even been tempted to try my hand at it myself.

But it's not all about organized sports. The plans also include plenty of green spaces – trees, gardens, pathways, even pergolas and benches. They’re even planning nighttime lighting, making it a great space for evening strolls. Plus, there's a dedicated playground and covered marquee shelters, perfect for spectators during open-air events. It really sounds like they're trying to create a community hub, not just a place for athletes.

Perhaps the most impressive part of the whole plan? A single-level underground car park beneath the entire complex, with space for around 230 cars. Parking can be a nightmare in Mijas, so this is a huge win. It's clear the developers are thinking about the practicalities of attracting a large number of visitors.

All in all, this Sports complex looks set to be a fantastic addition to Mijas. It's a significant investment in the health and well-being of the community, and it promises to transform the Don Elías neighborhood into a vibrant sports and recreation destination. Let's hope the reality lives up to the hype. We'll be keeping a close eye on the construction progress.
