Is Mendoza the Next Brady?! Klatt's Shocking Prediction!

Bloomington, IN - It's a comparison that's sure to raise eyebrows, but FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt didn't mince words after Indiana's dominant College Football Playoff semifinal victory over Oregon. He likened the Hoosiers' quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, and their improbable playoff run to none other than Tom Brady and the New England Patriots dynasty. Yes, you read that right.

Is Mendoza the Next Brady?! Klatt's Shocking Predi...

For a team that was wallowing in mediocrity just two years ago with a paltry three-win season, Indiana's transformation under head coach Curt Cignetti has been nothing short of miraculous. They stormed through the playoffs, dismantling Alabama 38-3 in the quarterfinal and then steamrolling Oregon 56-22 to secure their spot in the national championship game. Just one more win separates them from their first-ever title, and Klatt believes Mendoza is the key.

Klatt sees striking similarities between Mendoza's poise and precision and the qualities that defined Brady's legendary career. "Guys that are hyper-prepared, very accurate, willing to take whatever the defense gives, willing to do whatever it takes to win," Klatt explained. "Mendoza has been playing on an ungodly level in playoff games against some of the best competition that our sport has to offer: eight touchdowns and five incomplete passes [in the postseason, and Indiana's win over Oregon was his] second-straight game with more touchdowns than incomplete passes. That's wild. Mendoza takes them from very good to great." It’s a bold statement, comparing a college player to arguably the greatest quarterback of all time, but the numbers don’t lie. I mean, think about it – Brady himself had to start somewhere, right?

The top-seeded Hoosiers, riding a perfect 15-0 record and boasting a combined 26-2 mark under Cignetti since 2024, have simply been steamrolling opponents. Their playoff run has seen them outscore their competition by a staggering 94-25. But it's not just Mendoza carrying the load. The Hoosiers boast a potent rushing attack spearheaded by Roman Hemby, Kaelon Black, and Khobie Martin, who have collectively racked up 2,526 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns. Add to that a dynamic receiving duo in Elijah Sarratt and Omar Cooper Jr., who have combined for 28 receiving touchdowns, and you have an offense that's virtually unstoppable.

And let's not forget about the defense. While the offense grabs the headlines, the Hoosier defense has been equally dominant, leading the conference in opponent rushing yards (a miserly 75.0 per game) and ranking second in opponent points (a stingy 11.1 per game). With playmakers like Louis Moore, Amare Ferrell, and Rolijah Hardy leading the charge, the Hoosiers are a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the ball. Whether or not they can truly emulate the Patriots' dynasty remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: Indiana is playing with a confidence and swagger that is truly reminiscent of those legendary New England teams.
