Title: Southeast Asian Country First to Block Musk’s Grok Over Deepfake Porn

Indonesia has become the first nation to pull the plug on Elon Musk's Grok AI chatbot, citing serious concerns over its potential to generate deepfake pornographic content. The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs made the move amidst mounting global scrutiny of the AI tool, especially regarding reports suggesting it can be used to create disturbingly realistic erotic deepfakes, even of minors.

Grok BANNED! Deepfake Porn Nightmare Sparks Global...

This isn't just some knee-jerk reaction. Indonesia, with its significant Muslim population, has stringent rules against obscenity. Minister Meutya Hafid emphasized the government's stance, calling non-consensual sexual deepfakes a "serious violation of human rights, dignity, and citizens' security in the digital space," and labelling the misuse of AI for fake pornography as "digital-based violence." The government clearly sees this as a major threat.

The future of Grok in Indonesia, a massive social media market, now hinges on X's – the company behind Grok – willingness to play ball. Specifically, they'll need to implement robust content filters and adhere to ethical AI standards. Officials from X have already been called in for talks, and I imagine those conversations are pretty tense right now. It's a delicate situation, as Indonesia represents a significant user base.

But Indonesia isn't alone in its concerns. The European Commission has ordered X to preserve all Grok-related documents and data until the end of 2026. This precautionary measure, taken under the EU's Digital Services Act, aims to prevent the destruction of evidence related to potentially illegal content. It's a clear signal that European regulators are taking this very seriously.

Across the pond, in the UK, The Telegraph reports that X might even face a full-blown ban over Grok-generated pornography. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reportedly passed the issue on to Ofcom, the media regulator, with all options on the table, including a complete block. Meanwhile, in France, prosecutors are investigating allegations that Grok has been used to create sexually explicit deepfakes, with hundreds reporting their photos had been digitally altered.

Since the launch of Grok 4 last July, Musk's AI venture has been plagued by controversy. Critics have pointed to extremist rhetoric, political bias, and, of course, these sexualized features as evidence of inadequate safeguards. The fear, and it’s a valid one, is that poorly moderated AI tools like this can expose vulnerable users, especially children, to extremely harmful content. It's a cautionary tale about the need for ethical considerations to keep pace with technological advancement. We'll be watching closely to see how X responds and whether other countries follow Indonesia's lead.
