Kevin Durant etched his name further into NBA history Friday night, surpassing the legendary Wilt Chamberlain to claim the seventh spot on the NBA's all-time scoring list. Durant dropped 30 points against the Portland Trail Blazers, bringing his career total to a staggering 31,435. While a monumental achievement, it wasn't enough to secure a win, as the Rockets fell 111-105 at the Moda Center.
Durant's Historic Leap! Overtakes Chamberlain - Wh...
Reaching this milestone places Durant among basketball's elite. He now trails only six players: LeBron James, Karl Malone, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and Dirk Nowitzki. LeBron James, of course, leads the pack with an unbelievable 42,601 points. It's a testament to Durant's consistent brilliance and longevity; he's been a scoring machine since entering the league back in 2007.
It's almost impossible to talk about scoring records without acknowledging Wilt Chamberlain. The man was a scoring phenomenon. Chamberlain, who sadly passed away in 1999, holds the untouchable record of 100 points in a single game. He also snagged two championships, one with the Philadelphia 76ers and another with the Lakers. Back in 1962, he averaged an almost cartoonish 50.4 points per game! He was the NBA's leading scorer when he retired in 1973, a mark that stood for quite some time. Before Friday’s game, Durant expressed his awe for Chamberlain’s numbers. "You see the numbers. You just can't comprehend somebody putting up 50 a game with 25 rebounds," Durant commented. "You want to compete with that and try to match that as much as you can. It's amazing just being in the top 10 with him, but to have the opportunity to pass him up, it's pretty sweet."
The NBA landscape provided other compelling narratives on Friday night. In Los Angeles, Giannis Antetokounmpo showcased his defensive dominance, blocking a shot by LeBron James and then stealing the ball from him on consecutive possessions in the final minute! That helped seal a 105-101 victory for the Milwaukee Bucks over the Lakers, marking their fifth win in the last seven games. Steph Curry also had a night, putting up 27 points and a season-high 10 assists as the Golden State Warriors cruised to a 137-103 victory over the Sacramento Kings at home. Talk about a statement win. Finally, the Oklahoma City Thunder demonstrated some serious grit, erasing a 21-point deficit in the second half to steal a 117-116 win against the Memphis Grizzlies. The NBA never disappoints.
