Will Tracy, the darkly comedic mind behind episodes of "Succession" and the biting satire of "The Menu," is diving into some seriously strange territory with his latest project: "Bugonia." This remake of Korean director Jang Joon-hwan’s cult classic "Save the Green Planet!" promises a potent blend of social commentary and unsettling sci-fi, and honestly, knowing Tracy's previous work, I'm already bracing myself for something brilliantly uncomfortable.

The premise is simple, yet deeply unsettling. Jesse Plemons stars as Teddy, a blue-collar everyman seemingly crushed under the weight of late-stage capitalism. He spirals into conspiracy theories, convinced that ruthless corporate executive Michelle (played by Emma Stone, re-teaming with Tracy after "Poor Things") is not who she seems. With the help of his brother Don, played by Aidan Delbis, Teddy kidnaps Michelle, determined to prove his increasingly bizarre theories. Think "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" meets a very, very disgruntled Reddit user.
In a recent interview, Tracy shed some light on the project's origins and his collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos. Apparently, Ari Aster, known for his own brand of unsettling cinema ("Hereditary," "Midsommar"), initially brought the project to Tracy. "There was a point where there was nobody attached, and then there was a question of, well, who do we send it to?" Tracy explained. He admitted that Lanthimos wasn’t on his radar during the writing process, but the pairing makes a strange kind of sense. Lanthimos's detached, almost clinical directing style could lend a chilling edge to Tracy's already sharp script.
Tracy described the writing process as occurring during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, a period of intense uncertainty and societal anxiety. This definitely seems to have seeped into the script, especially in the character of Teddy, who becomes consumed by online conspiracy theories. While Tracy admitted he didn't delve directly into the depths of Reddit threads or incel forums for research, you can feel the influence of that sort of online echo chamber in the core of the story. It's a reflection of our times, where distrust and paranoia seem to be on the rise.
What's particularly intriguing is that at one point, the original director, Jang Joon-hwan, was considered to direct the remake of his own film. As Tracy wisely notes, "the idea of someone directing a remake of their own movie is always a little bit of a tricky idea." It’s understandable why they ultimately went in a different direction. With Lanthimos at the helm and Tracy's darkly comedic sensibility, "Bugonia" has the potential to be a truly unique and unsettling cinematic experience. I, for one, am both excited and slightly terrified to see what they come up with.
