Lula & Carney: A Secret April Meeting That Could Change Brazil?!

Lula & Carney: A Secret April Meeting That Could Change Brazil?!
Current Affairs 09 January 2026

Brazil’s President Lula just dropped a bit of a bombshell on social media, hinting that Prime Minister Mark Carney might be heading to Brazil next month. According to Lula's post on Thursday, the two leaders had a rather productive phone call covering everything from Venezuela to global governance. But before we get too excited about potential April showers in Rio, there might be a slight disconnect between Lula's enthusiasm and the official line coming from Ottawa.

Lula & Carney: A Secret April Meeting That Could C...

Lula, never one to shy away from a strong statement, laid it out there: He and Carney apparently "condemned the use of force without support in the United Nations Charter and international law" regarding the situation in Venezuela. He also mentioned a shared agreement on the need to shake up those dusty old global governance institutions. Sounds like a real meeting of the minds, right? Specifically, the Brazilian president condemned the United States' use of force in Venezuela.

However, the Prime Minister’s Office in Ottawa painted a somewhat different picture. Their version of the phone call, while acknowledging discussions about Venezuela, focused on the need for a "Venezuelan-led transition process that respects the democratic will of the Venezuelan people." A much more diplomatic phrasing, wouldn't you say? There was also a subtle emphasis on upholding international law and sovereignty, but notably absent was any direct condemnation of the US's recent actions – namely, the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. And here's the kicker: the PMO statement didn't mention anything about a potential April visit to Brazil. Zero. Zilch. Nada.

Now, I've seen this kind of dance before. Often, different governments highlight different aspects of a conversation to suit their own narratives. But this feels a little more… significant. The Canadian Press has reached out to the PMO for some clarification, but so far, crickets. I can't help but wonder, is Carney actually planning a trip? And if so, is he fully on board with Lula's outspoken stance on Venezuela? Or is this a case of two leaders interpreting the same conversation through very different lenses? It's worth remembering the US captured Maduro last Saturday in Caracas. Both Maduro and his wife have pleaded not guilty to drug charges in New York. Trump even suggested in an interview with The New York Times that American oversight of Venezuela could continue for years.

Honestly, this whole situation raises more questions than it answers. We'll be keeping a close eye on this story, and will update you as soon as we hear back from the PMO. In the meantime, it seems we're left to speculate on whether Carney is packing his bags for Brazil, and just how aligned Canada and Brazil truly are on the increasingly volatile situation in Venezuela. Stay tuned.
