Toyota Recalls Over 166,000 Vehicles Globally Over Steering System Concerns
Toyota is recalling more than 166,000 vehicles worldwide, including over 27,000 in Germany, due to a potentially serious safety issue affecting the steering system of its Proace and Proace Verso models. The recall, triggered by investigations from the German Motor Vehicles Authority (KBA), centers on corrosion in the front suspension system that could lead to screw breakage and a subsequent loss of steering control.

The KBA identified that the bushings in the front control arm mounting points of the affected vehicles are susceptible to corrosion. This corrosion could weaken the screws holding the control arm in place, potentially leading to their failure. The consequences of such a failure are significant, as it could severely impair steering control, resulting in unpredictable vehicle behavior and increasing the risk of accidents.
The recall specifically targets Toyota Proace
The recall specifically targets Toyota Proace and Proace Verso models. Owners are urged to determine if their vehicle is affected and to schedule a necessary inspection and repair. Toyota has provided two avenues for owners to check their vehicle's status: contacting an authorized Toyota dealer or customer service representative, or utilizing the "Recall Check" page on Toyota's official website. This online tool requires the vehicle's 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), easily located in section "E" of the vehicle registration document or section "zu 4" of the registration document.
The KBA has stated that the required repairs will involve replacing the front control arm bushings and screws. Crucially, the authority has also warned that drivers who fail to address the recall could face a driving ban, underscoring the seriousness of the potential defect.
While Toyota has not yet publicly announced specific details regarding repair costs, industry experts, including the German Automobile Club (ADAC), anticipate that the company will cover the expenses, even for vehicles beyond their warranty period. This practice is common among manufacturers seeking to maintain brand trust and customer loyalty.
Despite the potential severity of the issue, Toyota has confirmed that there have been no reported accidents or injuries directly related to the defect to date. However, the KBA's technical investigation is still ongoing, suggesting further developments and potential updates to the recall may occur. Owners of Proace and Proace Verso models are strongly encouraged to promptly check their vehicle's recall status and schedule the necessary repairs to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road.
