Berlin is buzzing with anticipation as the Berlinale Co-Production Market gears up for its 23rd edition, scheduled for February 14-17. This year's selection promises a diverse and exciting slate, showcasing 35 feature film projects poised to become the next international hits. As someone who's followed this market for years, I can say it's consistently a hotbed for emerging talent and bold storytelling.
Berlinale Buzz: 35 Film Projects Revealed - What G...
Leading the charge is "Lotus Feet," a project from Malaysian director Amanda Nell Eu. Fresh off the heels of her Cannes Critics’ Week Grand Prize win with "Tiger Stripes," and its subsequent Oscar submission, Eu is definitely one to watch. "Lotus Feet" already has industry insiders talking, and its inclusion here practically guarantees further momentum.
Then there's Chilean director Fernando Guzzoni's "People Still Die of Love," a romantic drama that's been simmering for quite some time. Guzzoni actually started developing this *before* his Venice Horizons-winning "Blanquita," another film that made an Oscar bid. That’s a testament to the long and often arduous process of bringing a film to life. Also joining the lineup is Klaudia Reynicke, the Swiss Peruvian director whose "Queens" made waves at Sundance and Berlin before becoming Switzerland’s Oscar entry. Her new project, "Il Dominio," promises to be equally compelling.
The Rotterdam-Berlinale Express initiative is also bringing some intriguing projects to the table. "Beirut Baby" from Lebanese directors Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, alongside "The Dispute" by U.S. directorial duo Andrea Ellsworth and Kasey Elise Walker, are both participating. Interestingly, "The Dispute" is being produced by Riley Keough’s U.S. production company, Felix Culpa. It's always exciting to see established actors branching out into producing, bringing their creative eye and industry connections to new projects.
Beyond the main selections, the Talent Project Market, in collaboration with Berlinale Talents, is spotlighting upcoming features from alumni producers. Indonesian producer Yulia Evina Bhara, known for her award-winning work, will be presenting "Watch It Burn," the latest project by Makbul Mubarak. Bhara previously launched Mubarak's "Autobiography" at the Talent Project Market in 2019, so clearly, this is a relationship that continues to bear fruit.
And it's not just about individual films. The Company Matching program will support five independent production houses this year, focusing on structural networking and their overall project slates. This year's participants include companies from Germany, Spain, Italy, Ukraine, and Brazil, highlighting the international scope of the market.
The Berlinale Co-Production Market has a proven track record. Over the past two decades, it has supported nearly 400 international co-productions, with recent successes including Agnieszka Holland’s "Franz" and Teona Strugar Mitevska’s "Mother." It's safe to say that the films selected for this year's market are well-positioned to become the next critical darlings and audience favorites. I'll be watching closely!
