Kyiv reeled this morning after a Russian hypersonic Oreshnik missile slammed into the capital overnight, a grim reminder that even as diplomatic efforts sputter, the war grinds on with devastating ferocity. The attack, which also involved a swarm of drones, came on the heels of Moscow’s rejection of a proposed post-war peacekeeping plan – a plan that involved the deployment of European troops, a red line for the Kremlin.
Hypersonic Strike! Putin Rejects Peace, Ukraine Re...
The missile strike, part of a broader assault, triggered fires in apartment buildings and, according to initial reports, claimed the lives of at least four people. It's a chilling development as the conflict inches towards its fourth year, and frankly, you can feel the desperation building amongst Ukrainians and their Western allies who are scrambling for any kind of resolution.
The proposed peacekeeping plan, which reportedly had Ukraine's blessing and backing from several European nations, envisioned deploying European troops following a ceasefire. However, Russia, which launched its full-scale invasion back in February 2022 – partly, they claimed, to stave off NATO expansion – has consistently and vehemently opposed any Western military presence within Ukraine’s borders.
Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova didn't mince words on Thursday, warning that any such troops would be "considered legitimate military targets." She essentially painted Ukraine and its American and European allies as a unified "axis of war." The rhetoric is escalating, and that's never a good sign.
While diplomats continue to try and break the deadlock in what has become the deadliest European conflict since World War II, Russia has only intensified its offensive, subjecting Ukrainian cities to relentless daily bombardment. It’s a brutal strategy designed to wear down the Ukrainian people and their will to resist.
The Russian defense ministry, unsurprisingly, claims it targeted only "strategic targets" with the Oreshnik hypersonic missile. They characterized the attacks as retaliation for a December drone strike targeting a residence allegedly linked to President Vladimir Putin. Of course, Ukraine has flatly denied any involvement in that alleged attack. These tit-for-tat accusations are becoming a constant refrain in this conflict.
Ukrainian authorities reported that a "infrastructure facility" near Lviv was struck by a ballistic missile traveling at hypersonic speed. In Kyiv, the drone strikes resulted in four deaths and at least 24 injuries, including first responders and police officers. A medic was tragically killed while responding to a strike at a residential building when the site was hit *again*. Mayor Vitali Klitschko called it a "massive enemy missile attack," leaving some neighborhoods in darkness. It's harrowing to imagine the chaos and fear on the ground.
The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv issued a stark warning on Thursday about a "potentially significant air attack" in the coming days. Sadly, they were right. The war continues its grim march, leaving a trail of destruction and despair in its wake.
