Well folks, it seems like the console wars are cooling down a bit, or at least Microsoft is extending an olive branch. Obsidian Entertainment's "Avowed," the first-person RPG that launched as an Xbox exclusive, is officially coming to PlayStation 5. I remember when this was first announced and the Xbox faithful were quite pleased. Now, everyone gets to enjoy it.
Avowed on PlayStation?! Xbox Fans Stunned by HUGE ...
The news dropped during the New Game+ Showcase, and frankly, it was a bit of a surprise. Set to launch on February 17, 2026, it’ll be hitting the PS5 just before its first anniversary. And here's the kicker: Microsoft will still be publishing the PS5 version, despite owning Obsidian. It really does show how strategies can change in the gaming industry.
"Avowed," for those unfamiliar, is a deep dive into the world of Eora, the same universe as Obsidian's critically acclaimed "Pillars of Eternity." Players take on the role of an envoy tasked with investigating a mysterious plague. Think exploration, magic, and brutal combat rolled into one, and that's "Avowed." It’s a classic RPG setup, but Obsidian has a knack for making these things feel fresh.
But the PS5 isn’t just getting a port. Alongside the new release, Obsidian is dropping an anniversary update for all platforms. This update is pretty substantial. We're talking New Game Plus mode (carry over your gear, reset to level 1, face tougher enemies!), a photo mode (because everyone loves a good virtual snapshot), three new playable races, character customization outside of just the initial creation screen (finally!), and even a brand new weapon type. Plus, the PS5 version will include all previously released content and updates – a complete package from the start.
Pre-orders are already live on the PlayStation Store, with the standard edition priced at $50 and a Premium Edition going for $60. The Premium Edition nets you a digital artbook, soundtrack, two exclusive armor sets, and eight companion skins. So far, no word on a physical release. Which is a shame, I still like having something tangible to put on my shelf.
This move makes "Avowed" the latest in a growing line of Microsoft-published titles finding a home on the PS5. "Grounded," "Hi-Fi Rush," "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle," and even "Forza Horizon 5" are all making the jump. And let's not forget "South of Midnight," revealed at the 2025 Game Awards, which is also coming to PS5 and the rumored Switch 2. It seems like Phil Spencer is serious about getting games into the hands of as many players as possible, and honestly? I'm here for it. More games for everyone is a win in my book.
