The crux of the issue seems to be that officials from companies vying for – and ultimately winning – lucrative contracts, were illicitly added to the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education's specification group. This, in effect, gave them insider access to confidential information and allowed them to influence the specifications to favor their own bids. Imagine the unfair advantage! The teachers claim that specifications were deliberately altered to ensure these companies won, leading to the purchase of excessive amounts of sports gear for sports not even officially registered at the schools, all under the guise of maintaining "materials and reserves."

And where did all this "reserve" equipment end up? Reportedly, vast quantities were stashed away in warehouses in Ümraniye and Bakırköy, gathering dust instead of being used by students. Even worse, some of the equipment supposedly never even made it from the winning firms to the Directorate of National Education in the first place. It's a classic case of phantom inventory and misuse of taxpayer money. The teachers weren't just raising alarms about the present; they were worried about the future too. While planned tenders for 2024 and 2025 amounted to significant sums, a proposed 300 million Lira tender for 2026 has rightly been put on hold while the investigation unfolds.

The teachers' report to the Istanbul Governorship paints a grim picture, highlighting concerns about rigged tender processes, unnecessarily high standards for equipment (think Olympic-grade gear for school kids!), and a failure to consider existing stock before making new purchases. One particularly absurd detail: despite the Ministry of National Education removing chess from the curriculum, thousands of chess sets were still purchased for Istanbul schools.
