You could be losing €1,300 a year without realising it – and most Pensioners don’t even know.

€1,300 Gone?! Are YOU Losing Money & Don't Even Kn...

For thousands of Pensioners across the UK, the financial anxieties they grapple with each month may be unnecessary. A shocking new report is highlighting a critical issue: a huge number of older homeowners in Britain are missing out on financial assistance they're fully entitled to, often simply because they're in the dark about its very existence. It's a tough reality when every penny counts.

Data from retirement specialists Just Group paints a stark picture. They've found that nearly three-quarters of pensioners who *should* be receiving extra financial aid aren't actually claiming it. The average unclaimed amount? A staggering €1,300 annually per household. That's money that could be making a real difference – paying for groceries, tackling those ever-increasing heating bills, helping with council tax, or just generally making life a little more comfortable. Think about it: for many older folks on fixed incomes, that's a small fortune just left on the table.

The sheer scale of this problem is what really hits home. Research suggests that around 42% of pensioner homeowners are eligible for *some* kind of government assistance. Yet, almost three out of four eligible individuals haven't even filed a claim! It’s easy to see how this quietly impacts so many households.

I've spoken to a few pensioners myself about this, and the reasons for missing out on this support often come down to a few key misconceptions. Some wrongly believe that owning their home automatically disqualifies them. Others are put off by what they imagine will be a complicated and stressful application process – they just don't think it's worth the hassle. And then, of course, there's the biggest hurdle: many simply don't know these benefits even exist. It's a real shame.

David Cooper, a director at Just Group, calls this an "epidemic" of older homeowners missing out on income they're legally entitled to receive. And it's hard to argue with that description. In the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, this lack of awareness can have devastating consequences. We're talking about real people, struggling to make ends meet, when help is literally available to them.

The unclaimed funds come from various support programs, all designed to help. We're talking about things like guaranteed pension credit (which tops up income for low earners), savings pension credit, council tax reductions, and, in some cases, even Universal Credit. Individually, they might seem small, but together they can make a significant difference to a household's financial stability.

Council tax support is a particularly glaring example of underutilisation. Fewer than one in four eligible pensioners – just 24% – are currently claiming it. Yet the average new claim is worth over €1,000 a year! Then there's pension credit, which is vital because it can unlock other forms of assistance, like help with housing costs and winter fuel payments. More than two-thirds of eligible pensioners are missing out on this entirely. It's time to get the word out and help these pensioners claim what is rightfully theirs.
