Venezuela Oil Shock: US Takes Control - What Will Happen Next?!
Current Affairs 08 January 2026

Well, folks, it seems the geopolitical drama just keeps unfolding. According to Energy Secretary Chris Wright, the U.S. is planning to sell Venezuelan oil “indefinitely.” Yes, you read that right. Indefinitely. This comes after, let's not forget, last Saturday's rather dramatic raid in Caracas where American commandos reportedly abducted President Nicolas Maduro. Things are certainly escalating, aren't they?

Venezuela Oil Shock: US Takes Control - What Will ...

Wright, speaking at the Goldman Sachs Energy, CleanTech & Utilities Conference on Wednesday, laid out the plan, stating that the U.S. would be "going to market the crude coming out of Venezuela, first this backed-up stored oil, and then indefinitely, going forward, we will sell the production that comes out of Venezuela into the marketplace." He even helpfully posted a little summary on Twitter. Can't say they aren't being transparent, I suppose.

Now, here's where it gets even more interesting. According to Wright, the proceeds from these sales will be "deposited into accounts controlled by the U.S. government." The official line, of course, is that this money will be used to "benefit the Venezuelan people." It's the old 'we're doing this for your own good' routine, but the global stage is used to seeing it. I, for one, am curious how that "benefit" will be defined and distributed. Color me skeptical.

The Energy Department even released a "fact sheet" claiming that the U.S. government "has begun marketing Venezuelan crude oil in the global marketplace for the benefit of the United States, Venezuela, and our allies." They're projecting the sale of approximately 30-50 million barrels. That's a lot of crude. Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed these projections, even claiming an "oil arrangement" with Venezuela’s state oil company, PDVSA.

And President Trump himself chimed in on Truth Social, declaring that the proceeds "will be controlled by me, as President of the United States of America.” So, there you have it, straight from the top. This whole situation is…well, it's unprecedented. Russia, unsurprisingly, isn’t thrilled, calling the abduction of Maduro "international banditry." They, along with many other nations, are demanding his immediate release. The world stage is getting pretty crowded with opinions and recriminations. Where this all leads, is anyone's guess, but it's bound to be a bumpy ride.
