Brrr! A chilling sight greeted residents of Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, on Thursday: expanses of tidal flats, completely frozen over. The stark image, captured in a Yonhap photo, paints a clear picture of the intense cold currently gripping South Korea. And unfortunately, it looks like this isn't just a passing cold front; forecasters are predicting the icy conditions will stick around for the long haul.

Korea Freezes! Is This The Worst Cold Snap EVER?!

According to the latest reports, this cold spell is expected to continue right through the weekend and into early next week. Now, I lived in Seoul for a couple of years, and let me tell you, those winters can be brutal. The forecast for Seoul? A teeth-chattering low of minus 9 degrees Celsius. That’s definitely scarf-and-gloves weather, folks. Remember to bundle up!

And it's not just the cold we have to worry about. Alongside the frigid temperatures, much of the country is bracing for snowfall. Most regions are expected to receive between 1 and 5 centimeters of the white stuff from Friday to Saturday. However, if you happen to be nestled up in the mountainous regions, prepare for a potentially heavier blanket – some areas could see up to 15 centimeters accumulate. That makes for some pretty scenic views, but also potentially treacherous travel conditions.

Thinking back to my time there, I recall how quickly the snow can turn to ice on those steep Seoul hills. Public transportation is usually pretty reliable, but even then, a heavy snowfall can cause delays and disruptions. So, if you're planning on traveling around Korea in the next few days, it’s definitely worth checking the weather forecast and transportation updates before heading out. Better safe than sorry, right?

This prolonged Cold snap is a reminder of the power of nature and the importance of being prepared. Whether you're in Seoul or elsewhere in the country, make sure you're taking the necessary precautions to stay warm and safe. And hey, maybe it's a good excuse to stay indoors with a cup of hot chocolate and binge-watch your favorite K-drama. Stay warm out there, everyone!
