Toyota's performance arm, Gazoo Racing, is officially striking out on its own, becoming an independent performance brand. This isn't just a name change; it's a significant strategic shift for Toyota, one that could reshape how we see their high-performance vehicles. Think of it as a graduation, with GR leaving the nest to forge its own identity.
Gazoo Racing SHOCK! What Will This HUGE Change Mea...
The move follows the recent separation of the Century marque, indicating a clear strategy by Toyota to create distinct brand experiences. Now, under the simplified moniker "Gazoo Racing," the performance division will sit above Toyota and Daihatsu but below Lexus and Century in the brand's hierarchy. This positioning is crucial, allowing GR to target a specific segment of enthusiasts without diluting the core Toyota brand.
We got a sneak peek of this shift with the unveiling of the GR GT. Noticeably absent of any Toyota badging, inside and out, it was a clear signal something was brewing. Apparently, that something is independence. The GR GT, a V8 supercar no less, will now be sold in Lexus showrooms, bypassing Toyota dealerships altogether. This is a bold move, clearly designed to elevate the car's status and appeal to a more discerning clientele.
But the GR GT is just the beginning. Rumors of a revived MR2 have been swirling for years, and this news only adds fuel to the fire. If the MR2 does make a comeback, expect it to wear the GR badge proudly, leaving its Toyota roots behind. The next-generation Supra, already fairly distinct from its BMW counterpart, would be a natural fit in the GR lineup. And a new 86? That would undoubtedly serve as the entry point into the Gazoo Racing world.
Powering these future GR models will be a mix of old and new. The exclusive twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 will be reserved for the GR GT, but Toyota's new "G20E" 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is expected to play a significant role. With over 400 horsepower on tap, this engine is being developed for both front-engine and mid-engine configurations, hinting at exciting possibilities. I even saw a rumor floating around about a new Celica being shown to US dealerships. Is that a hint of things to come?
And let's not forget about the electric future. The FT-Se concept, with its dual electric motors and all-wheel drive, could become a reality after 2026. Could this be the foundation for a fully electric LFA successor? It's definitely something to think about. One thing's for sure: Gazoo Racing is poised to become a force to be reckoned with in the performance car world, and I, for one, am excited to see what they come up with.
