Okay, folks, things are getting really messy down in Venezuela. Reports are flooding in, painting a picture of a raid gone sideways, and potentially a major international incident brewing. According to several U.S. media outlets, citing a Pentagon official, seven U.S. service members were wounded during what's being described as an operation to snatch Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro last Saturday.
Venezuela Raid: American Soldiers Wounded! What Ha...
The story, as it's being pieced together, is pretty wild. Apparently, U.S. commandos landed in Caracas, managed to grab Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and hightailed it out of there. But not without a fight, it seems. We're hearing about heavy casualties on the Venezuelan side.
The Pentagon is being tight-lipped, but sources are saying five of the wounded U.S. personnel have already returned to duty, while two are still recovering from gunshot and shrapnel injuries. The unnamed official also mentioned U.S. intelligence is still trying to get a handle on exactly how many Venezuelans were killed in the chaos. That's always a worrying sign – the fog of war, and all that.
Now, here’s where it gets seriously complicated. Venezuela’s military is claiming that at least 24 of their security officers were killed during the raid. They're putting the total death toll at a staggering 56. Defense Minister General Vladimir Padrino even went on TV, accusing U.S. forces of "cold-blooded" murder of Maduro’s security team, soldiers, and even innocent civilians. The rhetoric is definitely heating up.
*The New York Times*, quoting a senior Venezuelan official, is reporting an even higher number: at least 80 people killed, including security personnel and civilians. And then there’s Cuba. Adding fuel to the fire, Cuban authorities are claiming "32 Cubans lost their lives in combat" while trying to defend Venezuela from this "criminal attack perpetrated by the United States government." They say these individuals were fulfilling missions for the Cuban military and Ministry of the Interior, at the request of the Venezuelan government. Talk about international implications!
So, Maduro and his wife are now in New York, facing drug-trafficking conspiracy charges. They pleaded not guilty in court on Monday. That's a whole separate legal drama unfolding, but it's completely overshadowed by the military operation that got them there. What a mess.
Unsurprisingly, Russia, China, and a bunch of other countries in the BRICS and Global South are absolutely furious. They're condemning the U.S. actions and demanding the immediate release of Maduro and his spouse. This could really fracture international relations. Honestly, I don't think we've heard the last of this by a long shot. Stay tuned, folks.
