Well, folks, it seems the deluge isn't letting up anytime soon – at least not on Netflix. Kim Byung-woo's sci-fi disaster flick, "The Great Flood," has stubbornly clung to the No. 1 spot on the streaming giant's non-English movie chart for a third straight week. Netflix confirmed Wednesday that the film pulled in a whopping 11.1 million views for the week ending January 4th. That's more than triple the viewership of the runner-up, the Indian courtroom drama "Haq," which managed a respectable 3.4 million views.
Netflix 'Great Flood' Dominates! What's Behind the...
Released just before Christmas on December 19th, "The Great Flood" taps into a primal fear, painting a picture of near-planetary devastation. The film follows An-na, played by the talented Kim Da-mi, a single mother thrust into a horrifying scenario. Imagine waking up to find your apartment complex, and essentially the whole world, submerged in a catastrophic flood. Her struggle to protect her young son as they navigate this inundated hellscape is clearly resonating with audiences worldwide. I've seen a lot of disaster movies, but the claustrophobic, waterlogged setting of this one certainly adds a unique layer of tension.
It's interesting to see how different genres perform on these charts. While "The Great Flood" is dominating the movie side, the non-English series chart is telling its own story. Another Netflix original, "Cashero," has leaped to the top spot with 6.1 million views. This series, starring Lee Jun-ho as a civil servant with some rather unusual superpowers, clearly struck a chord, jumping from No. 2 the previous week (where it had 3.8 million views).
And what about the shows that were previously on top? "Culinary Class Wars: Season 2," which held the number one position for the two weeks following its December 16th release, has slid down to No. 3 with 3.4 million views. It just goes to show how quickly things can change in the streaming world! Other notable entries include the romantic comedy "Dynamite Kiss," starring Ahn Eun-jin and Jang Ki-yong, which secured No. 6 with 1.8 million views, and ENA's rom-com "I Dol I" coming in at No. 8 with 1.5 million views.
Ultimately, the continued success of "The Great Flood" suggests a strong appetite for both disaster narratives and quality Korean cinema. It’ll be interesting to see if anything can dethrone it next week. Stay tuned, folks – the streaming wars are never dull!
