BC's India Trade Mission: Will it Save the Economy?!
Current Affairs 07 January 2026

British Columbia Premier David Eby is packing his bags for India, folks, leading a trade delegation aimed at strengthening ties and boosting business opportunities for the province. This isn't just a casual trip; it's a strategic move to diversify B.C.'s international partnerships, particularly in light of those persistent tariffs imposed by the U.S. under the previous administration.

BC's India Trade Mission: Will it Save the Economy...

Eby made the announcement on Tuesday, outlining the mission's focus: to promote B.C. businesses, showcase our critical minerals, and highlight the sustainability of our wood products. Sounds like a solid plan. It all ties into B.C.'s "Look West" strategy, which, if you haven’t heard, is all about expanding our economic horizons beyond our traditional partners. Given the volatility we've seen in the U.S. market lately, this feels like a smart, proactive step.

Joining Eby on this trip is Ravi Kahlon, the Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth. The delegation is hitting the ground running with scheduled meetings in major Indian cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Bengaluru (Bangalore). They'll be sitting down with government officials and business leaders, all with the aim of attracting investment and, ultimately, creating more jobs back home in British Columbia.

And why India? Well, the International Monetary Fund is projecting some pretty impressive economic growth for the country – we're talking a whopping seven percent in 2025 and 6.1 percent in 2026. That kind of growth makes India a very attractive market for any province looking to expand its reach. Think of it as getting in on the ground floor of something big.

Eby himself seems pretty jazzed about the mission. He’s pointed out that India is actively looking to build stronger relationships with countries beyond the United States, especially considering the tariff situation. I think he's right. This trip builds on recent trade missions to Asia and Europe, signaling a clear intention from B.C. to become a major player on the global stage. It’s a gamble, sure, but a calculated one. It remains to be seen how much it pays off, but from where I'm sitting, it's a worthwhile effort to secure B.C.'s economic future.
