World Order CRUMBLING?! Great Powers Accused of Erasing International Law!
Current Affairs 06 January 2026

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has thrown down the gauntlet, accusing the United States of flat-out ignoring international law in its recent actions in Venezuela. It's a bold move, and one that could have serious ripple effects on Slovakia's relationship with Washington. But Fico seems determined to stand his ground.

World Order CRUMBLING?! Great Powers Accused of Er...

The core of Fico's outrage stems from what he calls the "kidnapping" of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. If you haven't been following, US forces allegedly raided Caracas, apprehended the pair, and then brought them to New York where they pleaded not guilty to drug-trafficking charges. Venezuela, unsurprisingly, is calling it an "imperialist attack" designed to loot their country's resources. I mean, can you blame them?

“I must unequivocally condemn and reject this latest American oil adventure…” Fico stated on Monday, seemingly bracing for impact. "Great powers today literally do whatever they want. They have completely erased the existence of international law and the necessity of complying with it." He didn't mince words, did he? It's a stark assessment, and raises serious questions about the current state of global politics. It almost feels like we're seeing a return to a sort of might-makes-right mentality.

Fico also pointed out the apparent impotence of the UN Security Council (UNSC) in the face of these events. "The UN is on its knees," he lamented. "Without reform and a real strengthening of its powers, the UNSC is completely toothless." He's got a point. What good is an international body if it can't even hold powerful nations accountable?

And it's not just Slovakia raising eyebrows. Even countries typically aligned with the US, like Mexico and Denmark, have voiced objections. Remember when Trump threatened Mexico over alleged drug trafficking and Denmark over Greenland? It's all feeling a bit... heavy-handed. The US Ambassador, Mike Waltz, defended the operation as lawful, citing the UN Charter's self-defense clause. President Trump, meanwhile, is straight up invoking the Monroe Doctrine, declaring the US is now "in charge" of Venezuela and even threatening Colombia and Cuba with military action. It’s a lot to unpack.

Despite the widespread condemnation, the UNSC couldn't muster a unified response, thanks in large part to the US's veto power. It's a classic case of power politics, and it leaves you wondering what the future holds for international relations. It’s clear that this situation in Venezuela is far from over, and the long-term consequences could be significant. It will be interesting to see who aligns themselves with who as this plays out.
