8BitDo's Xbox Controller: Ultimate Customization or Gaming Revolution?!
Gaming News 06 January 2026

Well folks, CES 2026 didn't disappoint, and one announcement in particular caught my eye: 8BitDo is finally jumping into the high-end Xbox controller market. They've just unveiled the Ultimate 3E, their first modular controller officially licensed by Xbox. And let me tell you, it looks pretty slick.

8BitDo's Xbox Controller: Ultimate Customization o...

This new bad boy is compatible with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, Apple devices, and Android, making it a true all-rounder. We're still waiting on a firm release date, but 8BitDo is aiming for a Q2 2026 launch – so sometime between April and June. Now, those of you who were wondering why there was no Xbox version of the Ultimate 2, well, here's your answer! They were clearly cooking up something bigger.

Prepare your wallets, though. Innovation comes at a price, and the 8BitDo Ultimate 3E is going to retail for $150. That's a significant jump compared to their other controllers, putting it squarely in competition with the likes of Microsoft's Elite Series 2, the Razer Wolverine V3 Pro, and a whole host of other premium licensed Xbox controllers. Is it worth the premium? That remains to be seen, but on paper, it sounds promising.

What makes the Ultimate 3E stand out is its modular design. 8BitDo is touting this as their most technologically advanced controller yet, and the level of customization seems impressive. You can swap out the joysticks, D-pad, ABXY buttons, and even the front faceplate. It’s not exactly “budget-friendly” at $150, but it undercuts several of its direct competitors. This level of personalization is something we haven't seen from 8BitDo before, and it's genuinely exciting.

The most intriguing feature is the inclusion of two magnetic ABXY button modules: one standard membrane and one microswitch. Yes, you read that right, you can switch between the traditional squishy buttons and those satisfyingly clicky microswitches. It's a clever move that caters to different player preferences. Plus, you get two D-pad options – a newly designed eight-way D-pad and a classic four-way D-pad. The magnetic connectors make swapping these components a breeze.

And it's not just about Xbox; PC gamers get some love too. The Ultimate 3E boasts a polling rate of up to 1,000Hz in both wireless and wired modes, giving you that extra edge in competitive games. Plus, PC users can take advantage of customizable 6-axis motion controls when synced with the wireless dongle. Seems like 8BitDo is trying to cover all the bases here. This new controller is definitely making waves at CES and marks a significant step up for 8BitDo. I, for one, am eager to get my hands on it and see if it lives up to the hype.
