EAST LANSING, MI - You know, sometimes you just witness a game where everything clicks for one team. That's precisely what happened last night at the Breslin Center as No. 12 Michigan State absolutely dismantled USC, handing the Trojans their first back-to-back losses of the season in a commanding 80-51 victory.
Spartans CRUSH Trojans! USC Suffers Back-to-Back L...
From the jump, the Spartans looked like a team on a mission. Coen Carr led the charge with a powerful 18 points, but Jaxon Kohler's performance was arguably even more impressive. Kohler was perfect from the field, hitting all six of his shots – including three from beyond the arc – for a total of 16 points. He even tacked on his only free throw. And, nearly nabbed another double-double, grabbing eight rebounds in the process. Jeremy Fears Jr. also chipped in with a solid 15 points and seven assists, orchestrating the offense beautifully.
The game really turned in the first half when Michigan State unleashed a 27-6 run that completely swung the momentum. They never looked back, maintaining a lead of at least 20 points for a significant portion of the second half. It's the kind of performance that makes you wonder just how far this Spartans team can go this season.
Speaking of Kohler, the sophomore is having himself quite the run. According to Sportradar, he's the first Spartans player since at least the 1996-97 season to record at least 10 points and 10 rebounds in five consecutive games. While he didn't quite get there last night, his consistent contribution is a huge factor in Michigan State's success.
USC, on the other hand, looked completely out of sorts. Ezra Ausar and Jerry Easter tried to provide some offensive spark, scoring 16 and 12 points respectively, but the Trojans were never really in the game. What’s worse, the Spartans completely shut down Chad Baker-Mazara, holding him to just four points after he came into the game averaging a team-high 20.4. That's a testament to the Spartan's defensive intensity.
This win was a great response from Michigan State after their narrow loss to No. 10 Nebraska. Bouncing back with such a dominant performance shows resilience, and I think that's a key trait for a team with championship aspirations. As for USC, well, they're probably not enjoying their trip to the Midwest so far, especially after suffering a 30-point loss to No. 2 Michigan prior to this game. They have one more game against Minnesota before heading back to sunny California. Maybe a change of scenery is exactly what they need.
Ultimately, the numbers speak for themselves. Michigan State shot 50% from the field while holding USC to a dismal 33%. It was a comprehensive victory that showcased the Spartans' potential.
