Splitgate Arena Reloaded, the supposed savior of the portal-infused arena shooter that once had everyone buzzing, is facing a rather lukewarm reception. Despite a flashy relaunch, the game seems to be struggling to recapture the magic that briefly made the original *Splitgate* a darling of the gaming world.
Splitgate Reloaded: Epic Fail?! What Went Wrong Af...
Released on December 17th, Splitgate Arena Reloaded, intended to be a complete overhaul of *Splitgate 2*, hasn't exactly set the world on fire. SteamDB, the unofficial but reliable Steam database, reveals a peak of just 2,297 concurrent players initially. Now, the game seems to have settled into a more...modest average of around 1,000 players. Let's be honest, that's a far cry from the glory days of the original *Splitgate's* open beta, which saw a whopping 67,724 players simultaneously tearing through portals on Steam. Ouch.
Now, before we write its obituary, it's important to remember that SteamDB only tells part of the story. Console numbers – PlayStation and Xbox – are a black box from that perspective. The developers, in a recent blog post, claimed that over 150,000 players jumped into *Arena Reloaded* within the first five days. They also stated that player retention is "at an all-time high." Take that with a grain of salt, of course. Marketing speak is a powerful thing, after all. But it’s a possible sign that there are some loyal fans out there still finding fun in the game.
To their credit, the developers aren't giving up. They're promising a "significant" marketing campaign this year, alongside a roadmap of updates designed to keep players engaged. This month alone is slated to bring a new map, "Arena Royale," the "One in the Chamber" mode (a personal favorite of mine, if done right), and other goodies. It's a good sign that they're supporting the game so early on.
Of course, it's hard to forget the controversy that dogged the game last year. Game director Ian Proulx raised eyebrows at Summer Game Fest by sporting a "Make FPS Great Again" hat, reminiscent of a certain former president's campaign slogan. He later apologized, but the internet never forgets, does it? It's hard to say how much that impacted public perception, but it certainly didn't help.
Looking ahead, *Splitgate Arena Reloaded* is banking on competitive events to inject some much-needed life into the community. There's a $5,000 tournament featuring *Splitgate* content creators, and a larger $25,000 community challenge. Plus, a "welcome back" event is offering players the chance to snag the coveted T200 character skin, a popular item from the original game. Whether these efforts will be enough to turn the tide remains to be seen. For now, *Splitgate Arena Reloaded* is fighting an uphill battle to win back the hearts (and controllers) of gamers. Let's see if they can pull it off.
