The final day of 2025 was a whirlwind, wasn't it? Between the holiday festivities, New Year’s celebrations, and all those age-old traditions, it's hard to believe folks had any energy left. But they did! A record-breaking 4,000 participants, in fact, braved some less-than-ideal weather and, from what I heard, a few minor traffic snags, to compete in the annual San Silvestre race in Cartagena. Distances ranged from a brisk 500 meters – perfect for the kids, I imagine – to a challenging 5.8 kilometers for the seasoned runners.

And let me tell you, the spirit was incredible. Runners, many sporting absolutely wild and vibrant costumes (I saw one guy dressed as a giant grape!), turned out in force for this highly anticipated event. You could feel the energy in the air; a real sense of community and shared celebration, despite the competitive edge. I even saw a few families running together, which was really heartwarming.

This year's competition was particularly exciting. A young duo really stole the show. Twenty-four-year-old Víctor Requena and fifteen-year-old Rania Eroussafi emerged victorious from the massive field of 4,000 athletes. That’s quite an achievement! They showcased exceptional talent, dedication, and a clear passion for running. It was genuinely inspiring to watch them both cross the finish line.

But here's the real kicker: both Víctor and Rania shattered existing records in this long-standing race! It's not just about winning; it's about pushing boundaries and achieving something extraordinary. The crowd went wild when the announcer confirmed the new records. A fantastic way to cap off the year, wouldn't you agree? It leaves you feeling optimistic for the year ahead. What a great story to start 2026!
