Stranger Things Finale: Demogorgon Mystery SOLVED! You Won't Believe It!

So, the dust has settled on Hawkins, Indiana (sort of), and "Stranger Things" has bid us adieu. But amidst the emotional goodbyes and the epic showdown with Vecna, a question lingers in the air like the lingering scent of waffle crumbs: Where in the Upside Down were the Demogorgons during that final battle?

Stranger Things Finale: Demogorgon Mystery SOLVED!...

Eleven and her crew faced off against Vecna and the Mind Flayer in what was, admittedly, a visually stunning and emotionally charged climax. Yet, the series' signature monsters – those flower-faced, teeth-filled terrors – were conspicuously absent. Not a demodog to be seen, not a bat to be swatted. This didn't go unnoticed by fans, and rightfully so.

Thankfully, the Duffer Brothers, the masterminds behind the "Stranger Things" phenomenon, have addressed this very important oversight. In an interview with TheWrap, Matt and Ross Duffer gave a few reasons, and honestly, they make sense. Apparently, Vecna was caught completely off guard by the Hawkins crew's sneak attack on The Abyss, his home turf. He was forced to rely on the Mind Flayer, who, let's be honest, is a pretty formidable weapon in his own right.

However, even more crucial is that Demogorgons aren't exactly Vecna's personal, always-on-call army. Their numbers within The Abyss are limited. Beyond that, and this is where it gets interesting, the Duffers confessed to something they call "demo fatigue."

Remember that pretty intense Demogorgon fight in Season 5, Volume 1, when Will's powers started kicking back in? Yeah, the creators were concerned about overusing the creatures, which I totally get. Sometimes less is more, and you don't want to water down the scariness of a monster by throwing it at the screen every five minutes.

Matt Duffer elaborated, "Mainly it’s just that Vecna was not expecting this sneak attack on his home turf. We obviously discussed having a demo battle on top of the Mind Flayer battle, but it felt more right to us that why does he need the demos when the Mind Flayer is this giant thing and can attack them? He doesn’t need his little ant army to attack, he’s going to take care of this himself." So, a dash of Vecna's overconfidence, plus a healthy dose of "demo fatigue," resulted in their absence. Fair enough.

Interestingly, Matt Duffer also let slip that they'd considered including a scene featuring a field of Demo-eggs, similar to something out of "Aliens," which I think would have been awesome. Shame that didn't make the cut. Some fans have even suggested that Will, controlling the Demogorgons, would have been amazing, but given that the Upside Down is now... well, let's just say "reconfigured," those Demogorgons are probably stuck in The Abyss indefinitely. Maybe they'll start their own community down there. Who knows?
