Ex-CIA Director Implicates Israel in Iran Protests?! What Happens Next?
Current Affairs 04 January 2026

Folks, things are heating up in Iran, and it looks like the usual suspects are circling. Former CIA Director Mike Pompeo has practically winked and nudged at the potential involvement of Israeli intelligence in the ongoing protests rocking the Islamic Republic. Now, I've seen a lot in my time covering these geopolitical hotspots, but this feels particularly volatile.

Ex-CIA Director Implicates Israel in Iran Protests...

Pompeo, never one to mince words, took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his support for the Iranian protestors. But it wasn't just a simple "good luck, guys." Oh no. He cleverly dropped hints about the protests spreading like wildfire, referencing specific cities and even throwing in a "Happy New Year to every Iranian in the streets. Also to every Mossad agent walking beside them." Subtle, right? It’s almost like he's giving them a shout-out – or at least, that's how it reads to me.

His comments come on the heels of reports about a Farsi-language X account, supposedly linked to Mossad, openly encouraging the protests. This account is essentially claiming its agents are already embedded within the crowds. That's a bold move, and it certainly adds fuel to the fire. Iranian authorities, naturally, are pointing fingers at Israel, accusing them of stirring up trouble and turning legitimate grievances into violent clashes. Seems like everyone is playing the blame game here, as usual.

And then you've got Trump weighing in. Never one to be left out of a good international crisis, he threatened military intervention "if Iran shoots and violently kills peaceful protesters." It’s the kind of statement that makes you wonder if we're about to see another round of escalating tensions. I mean, remember those airstrikes last year? The ones the U.S. and Israel conducted on Iranian nuclear facilities? They claimed it was to prevent Iran from getting nukes, but Tehran’s always denied that. The whole situation feels like a powder keg waiting to explode.

Iran, unsurprisingly, isn't taking these threats lying down. They've appealed to the UN, accusing Trump of "incitement to violence" and demanding that Washington back off. Foreign Minister Araghchi, while acknowledging the right to peaceful protest, is warning against violence and foreign interference. It’s a delicate balancing act, and frankly, I'm not sure how much longer it can last. The whole thing is a mess, and frankly, I'm worried about where it's all headed.
