Luke Littler has done it again! In a performance that bordered on bullying, the 18-year-old sensation dismantled Gian van Veen 7-1 to clinch his second consecutive PDC World Championship title. This young man is truly something special, joining the ranks of legends like Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis, and Gary Anderson as a back-to-back champ.
Littler Lifts Title AGAIN! Darts World Stunned by ...
Only his third appearance at the Alexandra Palace, and Littler is already etching his name into the history books. Taylor's 14 titles might seem like an impossible dream, but after witnessing Littler's sheer dominance against Van Veen, you can't help but wonder if anything is truly out of reach for "The Nuke." It's hard not to get caught up in the hype, especially when you see the level of composure he brings to the game.
"It's very special," Littler told Sky Sports, and you could see the genuine emotion in his eyes. "We've got to keep going, we've got to keep adding more titles. We can't stop here. We're still on this rollercoaster." That's the mentality of a champion, right there. It's that drive, that hunger for more, that separates the good from the truly great.
Littler averaged a mind-boggling 107 for much of the match, eventually settling at a still-impressive 106.02. Van Veen, who himself averaged just under 100, simply couldn't keep pace. The writing was on the wall early, and Littler sealed the deal in style with a magnificent 147 checkout, roaring in celebration as he turned to acknowledge the roaring Ally Pally crowd. The atmosphere was electric, you could feel the energy coursing through the building.
Tears flowed as Littler, now £1 million richer, received congratulations from Van Veen and was presented with the iconic Sid Waddell Trophy by Olympic cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy. As if that wasn't enough, Littler also smashed the tournament record for 180s, racking up a total of 73, including a staggering 16 in the final alone!
Van Veen, who deserves credit for his impressive run and will now rise to number three in the world rankings and make his Premier League debut, actually started strong. The 23-year-old Dutchman took out 116 for a 12-darter to win the first leg and ultimately the opening set. But sadly for him, that was about as good as it got.
Littler simply shifted into overdrive. Checkouts of 145 and 127 to start the second set weren't enough for Van Veen, as his teenage opponent responded in kind, leveling the score with a 116 checkout of his own. Littler then snatched the third set with a maximum 170 checkout – "the big fish" – and swept the fourth to take a commanding 3-1 lead, winning nine of the previous 10 legs. It was a relentless display of precision and power.
Even the infamous Ally Pally wasp, making a brief reappearance, couldn't distract Littler. Van Veen attempted a rally with a 137 to start the fifth set, but Littler just kept powering on, sealing his latest triumph with yet another spectacular finish. He is truly a force to be reckoned with.
"The scoring maybe tonight wasn't my greatest game in the whole tournament," Van Veen admitted to Sky Sports. "Luke wasn't in the mood to give me any more chances. He played phenomenally. I missed too many chances to make it an even game. That's why he's world number one by a margin now and back-to-back world champion." High praise indeed, and well-deserved. Luke Littler is here to stay, folks. Get used to it.
