Former President Donald Trump has thrown a wrench into the already complicated situation in Venezuela, publicly questioning Maria Corina Machado's leadership potential. It's also worth remembering that Machado was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize just last December, a move the Nobel Committee justified by citing "her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy." To have Trump, of all people, dismiss her leadership now is a strange twist. But then again, nothing about this situation has been straightforward.

The situation is further complicated by Trump's own pronouncements. He declared that the U.S. will essentially "run" Venezuela and control its oil production until a "proper transition of power" occurs. A transition of power, of course, that he seems to believe Machado is not fit to lead. He even threatened a "second and much larger attack" if Caracas doesn't cooperate. It's a bold, if not reckless, statement. Now, we're left with a power vacuum, a Nobel laureate whose leadership is being openly questioned by a former US president, and a future that remains unsettlingly unclear.
