UAE Schools SHOCK! Friday Classes Cut Short – What Happens Next?!
Current Affairs 03 January 2026

UAE schools are about to get a Friday makeover. Starting January 9th, students across the Emirates will be wrapping up their school days a bit earlier to accommodate the new, slightly later Friday prayer time. It's a move that's sure to be welcomed by many families, as it aims to strike a better balance between education and religious observance.

UAE Schools SHOCK! Friday Classes Cut Short – What...

The new schedule applies to all students, from the little ones in kindergarten right up to the soon-to-be graduates in grade 12. This covers both public and private schools. The overall goal, as I understand it, is to give families more breathing room to get their kids from school and prepare for Friday prayers, which now start at 12:45 PM.

So, what does this mean for actual classroom time? Well, kindergartners will now attend from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM. For the younger elementary students (grades 1-4, or Cycle 1 as they call it), schools are implementing staggered schedules. The first group will be in class from 7:10 AM to 10:30 AM, while the second group attends from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM. This staggered approach should help prevent complete chaos during pick-up and drop-off times, something I'm sure parents will appreciate.

Things get a bit more interesting for the older students (grades 6-12, Cycles 2 and 3). The Ministry has announced separate timings for boys (7:10 AM to 10:30 AM) and girls (8:00 AM to 11:30 AM). It's not entirely clear why the difference in timings was implemented between genders, but it's something to keep an eye on for any potential future explanation.

And that’s not all. For students in grade 6 and above, schools are also being given the option to offer online learning on Fridays. Of course, this is subject to parental approval and the green light from the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), Dubai's education regulator. It seems like they're trying to provide some flexibility here, which is a good thing.

Speaking of the KHDA, they've confirmed that all private schools and early childhood centers in Dubai will be finishing lessons by 11:30 AM on Fridays. Many schools have already been proactive in letting parents know about the changed schedules, which is always a good sign – nobody likes to be caught off guard by these things.

Ultimately, this whole adjustment stems from the nationwide shift in Friday prayer times, confirmed by the General Authority for Islamic Affairs, Awqaf and Zakat. The KHDA has stressed that schools still have the flexibility to manage dismissal arrangements in a way that works best for their specific needs, aiming for minimal disruption to the educational process. It's a balancing act, for sure, but hopefully, this will lead to a smoother, more harmonious Friday for everyone involved.
