Joshua's Driver in Fatal Crash: Shocking Details Emerge!
Current Affairs 02 January 2026

Tragedy continues to ripple through the world of boxing following Anthony Joshua's recent victory over Jake Paul. What should have been a celebratory return to Nigeria has been marred by a devastating car accident that claimed the lives of two close members of his team. Now, the driver involved in that crash is facing serious charges.

Joshua's Driver in Fatal Crash: Shocking Details E...

Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, appeared in Sagamu Magistrate Court on Friday, answering to four counts. These charges include the most serious – causing death by dangerous driving – as well as the rather damning accusation of driving without a valid license. Think about that for a moment; the person entrusted with driving Joshua's team wasn't even legally allowed to be behind the wheel. The case has been adjourned until January 20th, leaving a cloud of uncertainty hanging over everyone involved.

The accident, which occurred on December 29th near Lagos, took the lives of Lateef Ayodele, a trainer, and Cina Ghami, Joshua's strength and conditioning coach. It's a heartbreaking loss for the entire team and, of course, their families. Reports indicate that the vehicle carrying the team struck a stationary truck. These types of accidents, sadly, are all too common on some of the busier highways around Lagos, often due to poor visibility at night and inadequate safety measures.

Joshua himself, 36, sustained minor injuries in the crash. He was thankfully discharged from Lagoon Hospital in Lagos after a period of observation. Gbenga Omotoso, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, confirmed that Joshua is currently recuperating at home. I can only imagine the emotional toll this must be taking on him, on top of the physical recovery.

Adding another layer of poignancy to this already tragic situation, Omotoso also revealed that Joshua and his mother paid their respects to Ayodele and Ghami at a Lagos funeral home before their remains were repatriated. That simple act of respect speaks volumes about the bonds forged within a close-knit team.

The timing of this tragedy is particularly cruel. Just hours before the accident, Joshua and Ayodele were sharing social media posts of themselves enjoying a lighthearted game of table tennis. It's a stark reminder of how quickly things can change. The accident followed hard on the heels of Joshua's impressive knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami. That win put him back on track to potentially challenge for the heavyweight title once again – a rematch against Oleksandr Usyk, perhaps. But now, boxing seems almost secondary in the face of such profound loss.
