Stokes and McCullum: Can They Survive the Pressure?!

Stokes and McCullum: Can They Survive the Pressure?!
Sports 02 January 2026

Despite a brutal Ashes series defeat Down Under, England captain Ben Stokes has come out swinging in support of head coach Brendon McCullum. Stokes insists that he and McCullum are the right duo to continue leading the England Test team, even after surrendering the series in decisive fashion.

Stokes and McCullum: Can They Survive the Pressure...

It's a bold statement, especially considering the pressure that inevitably follows an Ashes loss. Remember, the last time England won in Australia was back in 2010-11. Since then, it's been a series of disappointments, leading to calls for change. But Stokes is adamant that simply shaking things up isn't the answer. "There is no doubt in my mind that me and Brendon are the right people to carry on doing this for the near future," he declared, adding, "I can't see there being someone else who could take this team from where we are now to even bigger heights." That's some pretty strong backing.

Stokes and McCullum, who linked up in 2022, certainly enjoyed a honeymoon period, winning 10 of their first 11 Tests. It was exciting, attacking cricket, and fans were captivated. However, the reality of Test cricket, particularly against powerhouses like Australia and India, has since set in. Their record in the last 34 Tests is now a mixed bag – 16 wins, 16 losses, and two draws. More importantly, they haven't yet secured a series win against either Australia or India in a five-Test series. That's the benchmark, and they haven't cleared it.

The question now is whether Stokes's faith in McCullum is enough to stave off potential changes higher up the chain. Both Stokes and McCullum are contracted until 2027, but in the high-pressure world of international cricket, contracts don't always guarantee job security. And it's not just McCullum; Director of Cricket Rob Key could also find his position under scrutiny. Key, for his part, has attributed the Ashes struggles to a lack of preparation due to the preceding white-ball series against New Zealand. He wasn't willing to "write them off," but the scheduling definitely raised eyebrows.

Stokes seems to recognize the precariousness of the situation, expressing hope that he'll be consulted on any potential changes. "It is a situation nobody knows whether it is going to happen or not, but we're both pretty keen on carrying on doing what we are doing," he said. It's clear he wants to maintain the partnership. Whether the powers that be agree remains to be seen. Ultimately, results will speak loudest, and the pressure is now on Stokes and McCullum to deliver a turnaround, and fast. The upcoming series will be crucial to determine their future.
